Position Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the acquisition and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology. This will be accomplished by establishing and maintaining a high quality, research-active faculty who are committed to the research mission of UNC-Chapel Hill as evidenced by scholarly publication, the establishment of well-funded research programs and an exemplary overall international reputation. In addition, the faculty will demonstrate dedication to outstanding teaching of both undergraduate and graduate students in both classroom and laboratory settings. We seek to maintain and build the excellence of our program to provide the citizens of North Carolina with access to exceptional scientific scholarship, innovative research, first-rate training of our future scientists and the distribution of a basic knowledge of Biology to the UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate population without regard to their choice of major discipline. The Department of Biology has approximately 2449 undergraduate majors, 100 graduate students, 39 post docs, 67 faculty, 20 administrative and general support positions, and 21 research positions. The Hige Lab studies circuit mechanisms of learning and memory using Drosophila as a model organism. The main research techniques used in our lab include electrophysiology, two-photon imaging and behavior assays. |

Position Summary | The Hige Lab at UNC-Chapel Hill is seeking a postdoc, who will enthusiastically work on neurophysiological study using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Using this simple model system, our primary goal is to understand how sensory information is flexibly processed and translated into different behaviors depending on the animal’s past experience or current context. We employ multiple physiological techniques including in vivo whole-cell patch-clamp recording, two-photon calcium imaging and behavioral assays. By combining these techniques and the complete connectome information, there are on-going exciting projects. For more details, please visit our website (https://www.higelab.org/). |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | PhD in Biology or closely related field is required. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Successful candidates should have at least one first author paper published in a peer-reviewed journal. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | We welcome applicants with any research background, but the priority will be given to those with neuroscience background. Experience with fruit fly research is NOT required. We rather encourage individuals who worked with other model organisms to apply. Experience with engineering or programming would also be a plus. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements | N/A |
