Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) and the Institute of Marine Sciences at UNC-CH advances understanding of the earth and ocean processes that govern our planet, shape diverse ecosystems, sustain life, and drive environmental change. We promote exploration and discovery of the natural world by engaging students in research-based learning at all levels. Our graduates are equipped with the strong science foundation, critical thinking skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives required to tackle current and future environmental and resource challenges. We encourage engaged service that translates knowledge for the public good. We support a welcoming and inclusive environment, foster diverse identities and perspectives, and encourage collaboration with all segments of society.
Position Summary
We seek a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in hydrology-focused remote sensing to work on a NASA-funded project focused on developing and analyzing a new snow dataset. This postdoc will work on evaluating and using a new MODIS-based snowpack dataset for all of North America. They will seek to understand the dataset’s error characteristics and use that dataset to examine spatiotemporal patterns of snowpack across North America. The position is for eighteen months, with any extension depending on receipt of additional funding. It will involve evaluating and using large-scale remote sensing and in situ datasets, writing scientific papers, and presenting research at national and international meetings. If the successful applicant is interested, the position may also involve experience in co-mentorship of undergraduate and/or graduate students. The position will be housed in the UNC Global Hydrology Lab, which encourages a collaborative and supportive research environment. If you have questions about the position, please contact Dr. Tamlin Pavelsky at [email protected].
