Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Neuroscience Center is an inter-departmental research center at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Our mission is to promote neuroscience research at UNC-Chapel Hill with an emphasis on developmental, genetic, and disease-related processes.
Position Summary
The Scherrer lab at UNC-CH investigates the neural circuits and molecular mechanisms that underlie pain perception and its modulation by opioids, using the mouse as a model system and a variety of approaches including multiomics, mol/cell biology, mouse genetics, neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, opto-/chemo-genetics, in vivo calcium imaging, and behavior. 
Successful candidates will be investigating the brain circuits and neuron-types that shape and modulate pain experience, and the analgesic and detrimental effects of opioids, through RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, circuit tracing, recording and manipulation of neural activity, and behavioral studies in mice.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
MD and/or PhD in neuroscience, pharmacology, cellular and molecular biology or related disciplines (completion not required at the time of application)
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A strong background in molecular or systems neuroscience, and/or in the pain and opioid fields and/or expertise in the above mentioned techniques is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
We are looking for neuroscientists with experience with single cell RNA-sequencing or electrophysiological/optical recordings in vivo and in slices, and computational skills for analyzing transcriptomic or electrophysiological recording/calcium imaging data.
