Position Summary/Description:

Lineberger Members and Researchers from the Hussman School of Journalism and Media and School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) seek a postdoctoral fellow to join a vibrant research team advancing health communication and tobacco regulatory science. The postdoctoral fellow will support a project led by Drs. Sarah Kowitt and Seth Noar that is focused on understanding effective video advertisements for e-cigarette and vaping prevention among youth and young adults. The project includes a focus on disparities in vaping, especially among lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth and young adults. The postdoc will work on studies related to message testing; developing and implementing surveys and experiments; assisting with design and implementation of a randomized clinical trial; analyzing data; and other research related activities. The postdoc will lead project-related presentations and manuscripts for peer-reviewed conferences and journals. The position also includes time for the postdoctoral fellow to develop and explore their own research questions regarding health communication and tobacco regulatory science.
The postdoctoral fellow will be part of UNC's new NIH/FDA-funded Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science (TCORS), which aims to advance tobacco regulatory science to reduce health disparities by building the science for effective regulation of and communication about tobacco products disproportionately used by priority populations – flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes. As a UNC TCORS trainee, the postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to engage with pre- and postdoctoral trainees working on other TCORS projects, receive mentorship from a team of interdisciplinary scholars, attend seminars with leaders in the tobacco regulatory science field and skill-building workshops, and apply for funding to support innovative pilot projects that advance the Center's goals. The Center will provide funding for the postdoctoral fellow to present TCORS research at conferences. UNC has an excellent track record of training emerging tobacco control researchers who have published dozens of peer reviewed manuscripts, presented at national and international conferences, received NIH K and R awards, and launched independent careers.
The UNC Lineberger Cancer Center is a world-class NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center that is routinely in the country's top 10 NCI-funded institutes, thus providing a strong post-doctoral training opportunity. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill is a premier research university in the US, located in the Research Triangle Park, one of the most vibrant research corridors in the US. Chapel Hill enjoys mild weather, affordable cost of living, and offers a range of collegiate activities, professional opportunities, resources, neighborhoods, and cultural diversity.
Salary for the postdoctoral associate is dependent on experience. The initial appointment is for one year with additional one-year appointments for up to a total of three years. Applicants should submit: 1) cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae, and 3) a 2-3 page summary of their research background, interests in health communication, tobacco regulatory science, and health disparities, and expected benefits from joining the TCORS team. The expected start date is summer 2024. Qualified individuals should have a doctoral degree in communication, public health, social or behavioral science, or a related field.
