Position Summary/Description:

The Functional MRI Laboratory (Principal Investigator: Varina Boerwinkle, MD) at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill is dedicated to studying the brain networks of children with disease using resting state functional MRI in conjunction with multimodal neuroimaging (MRI, task-fMRI, DTI, DSI, MRS, MRA, PET, CT), neuroelectrophysiology (EEG, MEG) and computational models grounded on biophysics and applied mathematics. Approaches in fields of network theory, machine learning, neural networks & deep learning, multivariate statistics, scientific visualization and nonlinear dynamics are applied in the ongoing investigations. The Principal Investigator and her collaborators have quantified brain disease primarily in children with intractable epilepsy, demonstrating capacity to develop novel solutions, and increased cure rates, contributing directly to patient-tailored approaches in clinical patient care.
The laboratory has postdoctoral scholar positions open for research. This position would be ideal for PhD holders who are interested in using neuroimaging, advanced neuroimaging analysis methodology, and big data science and related approaches to explore interesting problems in the pediatric neurological disorders including epilepsy, cerebral palsy related movement disorders, and disorders of consciousness. The scholar will use advanced techniques for visualization, computational neuroanatomy, longitudinal neuroimage analysis and multivariate models of brain aging to facilitate scientific discovery and to assist the development of next-generation neuroimage analysis.

Education and Experience:

Prior experience with resting state functional MRI analysis, an interest in image processing approaches and good writing skills are highly desirable.
