Conversion of Lignin to High Performance Polymers
Center for Renewable Carbon, University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN)
As part of a large project on bioenergy and bioproducts from lignocellulosic biomass, the Center for Renewable Carbon at the University of Tennessee seeks applications for a full-time Post- Doctoral Research Associate position. The researcher will join a team exploring the manufacture of high performance polymers from lignins recovered from bioenergy lignocellulosic materials. The role of the incumbent will be to enhance our expertise in controlling lignin chemistry and properties towards their optimization for use in composite materials for building construction applications.
The position is to start on August 1, 2019 or as soon as possible.
The researcher will:
1) Perform work towards producing lignins with appropriate chemistries and therefore polymer properties suitable for diverse polymeric materials manufacturing.
2) Characterize lignin chemistries and polymer properties.
3) Interface with and/or assist team members working on characterization of biomass chemistry, lignin chemistry, and lignocellulosic biomass fractionation techniques.
4) Prepare and/or present research data for presentation at scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.
5) Maintain high quality research log books and prepare materials for team meetings.
6) Maintain a strong commitment to the research program.
The grant-funded position will have a 12-month duration in the first instance, and will be renewed for a further 12 months subject to satisfactory performance and grant funding. Salary and benefits are competitive. The University of Tennessee offers a comprehensive benefits package to all regular employees, including health and dental insurance, life insurance and retirement plans.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Polymer Chemistry or Materials Science/ Engineering or a related field. Candidates in the process of obtaining PhD will be considered but degree must be conferred by August 2019.
The candidate must have experience/expertise in reactive alloying of polymers, thermoplastic elastomers, dynamic vulcanization of rubber/plastic blends, renewable materials, preferably with experience in some of the following: chemistry of polymer modifications, polymer characterization methods (spectroscopy, rheology, extrusion of renewable polymers, thermal analysis, testing of mechanical properties), interfacial engineering of multiphase renewable materials and reinforced polymeric product development.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively are also required. In this regard the successful candidate will be expected to:
• Maintain detailed and accurate records
• Acquire and analyze data in keeping with project scheduling
• Supervise other personnel involved in the project
• Present results at conferences and other meetings
• Prepare project reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts
Interested candidates should complete an online application and submit the following: (1) a letter of interest that outlines his/her suitability for the position; (2) curriculum vitae; (3) copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts; and (4) contact details of three references.
