Job Summary
We are seeking multiple postdoctoral researchers to join the University of Utah Infectious Disease Dynamics Group (https://www.utahinfectiousdiseasedynamics.org/ ) to contribute to efforts developing and analyzing mathematical models to study the epidemiology of infectious disease transmission and inform disease control policy. We are seeking a motivated PhD-level scientist to contribute to multiple research, applied modeling, and training workstreams aimed at expanding and sustaining capacities in infectious disease modeling, application, and communication.
 
The postdoctoral fellow will work on one or more funded projects aimed at modeling transmission dynamics and interventions to reduce the incidence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities. As part of this project, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a broad team across The University of Utah, Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System, and the CDC Modeling Infectious Diseases in Healthcare Network.
The position will be for 1-3 years, depending on applicant interest and career plans
A successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
  • PhD and research experience in epidemiology, mathematics, biostatistics, biology, public health, or a related field
  • Programming experience in collaborative settings. The ideal candidate would have experience in writing packages in R and be fluent in the use of version control systems like Git.
  • Highly motivated, organized, and comfortable leading project staff to meet deadlines

Responsibilities
Working under the supervision of Damon Toth along with other team members, the successful applicant would have the following responsibilities:
  • Develop data-based models for transmission and control of high-priority pathogens in healthcare facilities and other high-risk settings
  • Design novel quantitative approaches to understanding transmission heterogeneity and its implications for population-level outbreak patterns, health disparities, and efficient targeting of mitigation efforts
  • Design network models and/or simulations of disease spread between multiple, linked congregate locations including healthcare facilities and households
  • Work with stakeholders in government and industry to translate modeling results into actionable insights for disease control efforts
