The Director of the Population Health Initiative at Florida International University is responsible for the direction and leadership of operational, financial, programmatic, and human resources activities for Population Health Initiative.. The incumbent will report directly to the University senior vice president of research to lead faculty to advance population health research, including, but not limited to, identifying, pursuing, and securing external funding/partners for the initiative. This is an open rank, tenured/tenure-earning, Professor position.

The mission of the Population Health Initiative is to support and foster research and education to advance population health through team-science to address social determinants of health and promote healthy living, longevity, and quality of life for all. In her/his role, the Director will provide strategic direction and leadership for operational, financial, programmatic, and personnel activities in line with our unique vision. This position will set and continually monitor goals and objectives to align with the strategic vision of FIU. This will entail close collaboration with various University stakeholders, facilitating coordination among different teams, colleges, departments, and centers involved in Population Health.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in communications and fostering relationships to navigate a dynamic landscape engaging in collaborative efforts with faculty and staff leadership across the institution. Balancing competing demands and priorities, this role provides expert guidance to the University provost and senior vice president of research, the Population Health Initiative executive council, and its external advisory board to drive the initiative's progress. Demonstrating profound expertise in population health-related research, the Director effectively leads diverse groups of faculty and staff, establishes strategic partnerships, and secures external funding. Additionally, knowledge of the complexities of universities is essential to manage competing interests effectively, maintain positive relationships, promote a positive experience, and adapt to meet the initiative goals within the broader goals of the university. The Director must also be able to navigate essential community, industry and governmental partners that need to be engaged in population health efforts and initiatives.

Health related research and education is one of the pillars of FIU strategic plan.  The Population Health Initiative is a strategic university priority to address major issues affecting health trends in South Florida, including specific social determinants and environmental factors that are local-regional in scope and yet are often reciprocally related to trends in neighboring countries in the Americas. As Director, this position plays a pivotal role in advancing systematic and applied research to sustain and improve health and promote well-being in South Florida communities and addressing related regional and international impacts to population health from trends such as climate change, migration patterns, housing and transportation, economic development and inequality, health care access, workforce issues, environmental hazards, and population composition. Success in achieving these goals and driving actionable policies, reforms, community-level interventions, and innovations for population health is instrumental in shaping the university's future impact on the broader community.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a PhD degree or equivalent terminal degree in a population health-related discipline.
  • Proven track record of impactful research in areas critical to advancing the university's vision for population health.
  • Comprehensive understanding of national and global opportunities and challenges in population health, with a keen awareness of future trends and possibilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, showcasing the ability to envision and successfully execute strategies.
  • Notable achievements in contributing to development efforts and securing funding for relevant activities.
  • Exceptional collaboration and relationship-building abilities, with a strong history of forging strategic partnerships.
