Position Overview

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Kansas invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit applications to a department lecturer pool for for part-time and/or full-time, temporary and/or regular undergraduate and graduate teaching positions.  Positions vary and are dependent upon the need for instructors, if any, for courses being offered each semester. The percentage of lecturer appointments will vary, subject to availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service. These are non-tenure-track members of the faculty whose primary role is instructional.
Applications will be accepted throughout the year and reviewed by faculty on an ongoing basis. Successful applicants will remain in the pool for one year and will be contacted as needed position vacancies become available in the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department. The successful applicant must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins, and international applicants must pass the TSE or Speak test before hire.

Job Description

100% - Teach one or two language or culture courses per semester in the chosen field:

  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.
  • Provide instruction throughout the semester, most classes meet 3 times/week for 1 hour/day.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
  • Prepare new course(s) and course material when being allocated a new class or a different level of the program to teach.
  • Supervise graders, tutors, and/or GTAs when needed.
  • Adhere to departmental, College, and university policies.

  • Required Qualifications

    Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through: 1) Descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application; 2) Record of accomplishment and productivity addressed in resume; 3) Information provided from professional references.
    Language Courses:

  • Lecturers of undergraduate courses must have at least a MA or a bachelor's degree and 5 years professional experience in a relevant discipline. For Language courses only: MA level degree or native or near-native fluency in the language they will teach and they must pass the AEC English language proficiency test required for GTAs.
  • Lecturers of graduate courses must have a Ph.D. or 10 years professional experience in the relevant discipline.
  • Culture Courses:
  • Lecturers of undergraduate courses must have at least an MA or a bachelor's degree and 5 years professional experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Lecturers of graduate courses must have a Ph.D. or 10 years professional experience in the relevant discipline.
