Position Overview


We are currently seeking Pool Lecturers for the Summer 2024 term.

The Applied English Center invites qualified professionals with relevant ESL/EFL teaching experience to submit online applications for part-time or full-time, temporary lecturer positions to teach one or more courses. Appointments vary and are dependent upon overall program needs and courses being offered during the summer session. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty whose primary role is instructional.

The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, a community of about 95,000. Only 35 miles west of Kansas City and 20 miles east of Topeka, you will never be far from barbecue, jazz, museum culture, and more. Lawrence has a lively downtown and a thriving arts and music scene, and its local government has enacted ordinances supporting equality for all members of its population. Lawrence locals covet the numerous sports and recreational opportunities, local shops, and a wide range of locally-owned restaurants.

  • Teach up to 16 hours/week in the intensive English program, specialized short-term programs, and/or other AEC programs.
  • Other duties as assigned. Expectations will be determined at time of appointment. Depending on appointment terms, pool lecturers may be expected to participate in professional service and professional growth.
Position Requirements:
  • The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins. Any employment with the University of Kansas is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check.
  • This position requires working on-site. 

Required Qualifications

All Applicants:

  • Master’s degree with concentration in TESL/TEFL or M.A. in Applied Linguistics with coursework in TESL/TEFL by the time of hire AND One (1) year ESL/EFL post-secondary or K-12 teaching experience with students from more than one culture by the time of hire; OR Bachelor’s degree with concentration in TESL/TEFL or Bachelor’s degree in Applied Linguistics with coursework in TESL/TEFL by the time of hire AND Two (2) years of ESL/EFL post-secondary or K-12 teaching experience with students from more than one culture by the time of hire.
  • Native speaker of English or required TOEFL and SPEAK (required scores below).

  • Applicants who are Non-Native Speakers of English:
    • A score of 60 on the SPEAK.
    • 26 or higher on each part score of the iBT TOEFL OR all scores 8 or above on the IELTS, OR scores 70 or higher on each section of the Applied English Center proficiency test is required.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful ESL/EFL teaching experience at two (2) or more levels of English proficiency.
  • Evidence of teaching two (2) or more skill areas.
  • Overseas teaching experience.
  • Experience in a university-level intensive English program.
  • Experience in using a web-based course management system, such as Blackboard or Canvas.
