Environmental Studies Program


Position Overview

The Environmental Studies Program at the KU-Edwards Campus invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for part- to full-time lecturer and/or online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online courses. Lecturers are non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester for development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the online course(s).

Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in environmental studies consistent with program instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.


Job Description

Regular Lecturer Duties:

  • Teaching EVRN undergraduate and/or graduate courses as assigned.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the lecturer must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.
  • Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours/week, one day a week.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
  • Adhere to departmental, College, and university policies.

  • Online Lecturer Duties:
  • Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. Provide timely feedback and instructor/student interaction in asynchronous online course format with occasions for online office hours and/or Q&A sessions. Regular weekly interaction is expected in online courses.
  • Provide instruction for course(s). Classes are generally in an 8-week or minimester format. Class meetings will generally be asynchronous, but instructional expectations match those of the face-to-face experience.
  • Administer assignments, tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades. 
  • Be available for students involved in classes taught. “Office hours” may include a set time where students can contact the instructor, but must also include expectations for timely responses to student inquiries outside of a set contact time.
  • Adhere to program, college and university policies.

  • Online Course Developer Duties:
  • Build an online course for the unit and/or the College Online Programs.
  • Design the course in accordance with program guidance and KU standards, which include working with instructional design staff in the Center for Online and Distance Learning.
  • Work in a collaborative environment, utilizing the expertise of the other major instructors in the (Program/unit/center).
  • Complete the course design process within a specific deadline to ensure the course is fully designed and quality reviewed prior to the date the course is to be offered, as determined by the academic program.

  • Required Qualifications

    Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.

    Required Qualifications:

    For instruction or course development of undergraduate level courses:

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree plus four or more years of work experience directly related to specific area of instruction, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree plus 2 years professional work experience AND additional certification, research, teaching experience, or specialized training directly related to area of instruction. 
  •  

    For instruction or course development of master’s level courses:

  • Combination of education and professional experience to reach, at least:
  • PhD in a related/relevant discipline (environmental studies/science, geography, geology, biology/ecology, toxicology, civil/environmental engineering, etc.);
  • PhD in an unrelated field, with cognate coursework in a related/relevant discipline;
  • PhD in an unrelated field and a master’s degree in a related/relevant discipline;
  • Master’s degree plus four or more years of professional experience directly related to specific area of instruction;
  • Master’s degree plus two years’ work experience AND additional certification, research or specialized training directly related to area of instruction or minimum two years teaching experience directly related to area of instruction;
  • Bachelor’s degree in related/relevant field, plus eight or more years of professional experience directly related to specific area of instruction AND minimum two years teaching experience directly related to area of instruction.
  • Demonstrated successful experience with higher education or professional continuing education programs.

  • Preferred Qualifications

    Preferred Qualifications:
    For instruction or course development of undergraduate level courses:

  • Advanced degree in unrelated area.
  • Relevant professional certifications, advanced training or research.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in an online format.
  • Demonstrated professional expertise in the intended teaching discipline by virtue of applied experience in the field.
  • Strong ties to professional community as demonstrated by employment, community or consulting activities.

  • For instruction or course development of master’s level courses

    :

  • PhD in indirectly related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications, advanced training or research.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at graduate or undergraduate level in an online format.
  • Demonstrated professional expertise in the intended teaching discipline by virtue of applied experience in the field.
  • Strong ties to professional community as demonstrated by employment, community or consulting activities.
