FULL-TIME/PROJECT POND DIVERSITY BIOLOGIST FISH AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 2 Habitat Program Olympia, Washington – Thurston County Anticipated project length is contingent upon continued U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding allocations under the cooperative agreement. Approximately 2.5 years through December 31, 2025 This biologist position is focused primarily on a monitoring project funded by the Habitat Strategic Initial Lead (HSIL) targeted at understanding how to improve habitat for amphibians, birds, and other species in developed and developing landscapes. Specifically, the position supports and supervises field work on biodiversity in stormwater ponds and natural wetlands around the Puget Sound region. The goal of this project is to understand which design and management conditions allow constructed stormwater ponds to function as habitat for amphibians, birds, beaver, and other co-occuring species. With that in mind, Picture yourself, working on diverse assignments including surveying for amphibians, birds, and beavers in ponds , conducting GIS analyses, and assessing in-water and upland habitat conditions. In this dynamic role, work with city, county, and non-profit partners to understand how to improve habitats for diverse species in developed and developing areas around Puget Sound With your experience, act as project and field lead to hire, train, and supervise field staff, acting as a lead biologist conducting biological and habitat monitoring, making decisions independently in the field as emerging situations arise, entering, managing, and interpreting data, and developing data summaries and reports. We are seeking a candidate who is familiar with monitoring biodiversity and aquatic habitats, using GIS, and collaborating with external partners. Duties: Our Pond Diversity Biologist Organizes and conducts data collection and data management in support of fish, wildlife, and habitat research and monitoring projects to evaluate how stormwater pond design and management promotes aquatic species abundance and diversity. Supervises one staff person who will be hired annually (typically March – October) and trains and directs that staff person field data collection for stormwater pond biodiversity research. Coordinates with external project partners Enters, QA/QCs, and summarizes data, interprets data, summarizes research results. Maintains and organizes field equipment and supplies. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: The working environment is a composite of field and office work. Up to 90% of the time will be spent in the field or preparing to go in the field during the focal field season, approximately March – October annually. While in the field, hiking off-trail through vegetation that may be extremely dense and up and down steep slopes will be required. Navigating along and within wetlands will is required. Employees will frequently be required to carry a moderately heavy pack (<40 pounds) that includes sampling equipment (e.g., hand net, iPad, field notebook, instream temperature sensors, measuring tape) and personal supplies (first aid kit, water, lunch, snacks, rain gear), and at times a field laptop. Employees will infrequently be required to carry by hand a 5-gallon buckets, dip nets, and rebar. Field work requires bending, ducking, balancing, and crawling through, under, and over dense vegetation and woody debris. Navigating and hiking throughout managed landscapes on foot, and over downed trees and wood or up streams that may be slippery. Navigating and driving on logging roads located on Private forestlands throughout western Washington. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. Schedule: Work hours are 40 hours per week – four days per week, ten hours per day - Monday through Thursday. This position is one member of a field team, there is no flexibility in workdays or hours during the field season Travel Requirements: Field work will be a mixture of primarily daily trips to field sites located within daily driving distance of the NRB, although overnight lodging near study sites will be required on occasion. Tools and Equipment: Vehicles (4WD trucks and SUVs) that are to be driven on dirt roads located in western Washington. Field and safety equipment that will be provided include: rubber boots, waders, high visibility vest, and rain gear. iPads and other devices to enter data collected in the field, monitors/sensors to deploy for data collection, laptop to upload data into databases. Office work includes performing basic functions using standard software (e.g., Microsoft Office) as well as mapping and statistical analyses in R and ArcGIS. Customer Interactions: Interactions with landowners, non-profit, and local jurisdiction project partners are integral - Maintain positive and productive working relationships with project partners and neighbors adjacent to study sites and provide proof of access permits if requested.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. AND Familiarity with amphibian and/or bird surveys Ability to: Collect data according to established protocols and make independent judgments in the field in the absence of the Supervisor. Use standard field equipment. Collect and process GIS information and create maps of study sites and equipment for reporting in ArcGIS and/or ArcPRO. Download and manage data and conduct quality control to assure data integrity in Excel. Utilize Microsoft software including Word, Excel, and Outlook. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Valid driver’s license PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in a relevant field Two (2) years professional experience conducting field research, familiarity with biodiversity monitoring, and water quality and physical monitoring. Experience conducting statistical analyses and data visualization in R. Experience leading / supervising subordinate staff in a field setting.
