JOB DESCRIPTION
The University of Indianapolis Police Department is seeking applicants for the Police Sergeant position. There are four full-time, non-exempt positions open. The Police Sergeant performs administrative and technical work under the supervision of the Police Lieutenant, by managing police officers, equipment, and work assignments to include special investigations or intelligence situations and field emergencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serves as a liaison between UIndy Police Administration and police officers.
  • Communicates with campus community, co-workers, subordinates, or others to provide directions and training, explain departmental policies and procedures, laws, ordinances, codes, etc., resolves complaints and personnel matters, and gathers and disseminates information.
  • Produces documentation including, but not limited to; department policy and procedure recommendations, administrative studies, department statistics, performance evaluations, with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Inspects; observes, and monitors all department issued equipment, subordinates’ conduct and appearance to determine compliance with law, codes, university policy, and department’s general orders.
  • Directs and advises the patrol division in regards to patrol best practices, investigative techniques, appropriate and legal police response, intelligence information and/or department policy.
  • Oversees schedule, investigations (criminal and noncriminal), equipment/supply/uniform inventory, vehicle maintenance, officer secondary duties, training, and the application of policy and training procedures.
  • Analyzes and reacts to emergency situations quickly, calmly, and correctly to adapt effective course of action, giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Performs the duties of a police officer.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED required; a degree or additional coursework in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of two years of consecutive law enforcement experience
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and a clean or acceptable driving record as defined by University Policy
  • Possession of a current valid Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board Basic Law Enforcement Officer Certificate or out-of-state waiver
  • Must not be under disciplinary action or investigation
  • Must not have received an unsatisfactory performance evaluation within the preceding 12 months of appointment
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, physical examination, and psychological fitness examination
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, physical examination, drug screen, and psychological fitness examination
