Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The mission of GC Public Safety is to protect, serve and educate. We accomplish this through the delivery of comprehensive and integrated safety, security and emergency preparedness programs in partnership with the community we serve.
The Department of Public Safety provides safety and security services for the Georgia College & State University community.
The Department is organized into two divisions, Operations and Support Services. These divisions are further organized into three sections, the Patrol Section, which reports to the Captain of Operations and the Investigations and Training Section and the Administrative Services and Emergency Management Section, both of which report to the Captain of Support Services. Each section is managed by a Lieutenant.
The Operations Division is primarily responsible for patrol services, event planning, and extra duty assignments. The Support Services Division is primarily responsible for functions that support the day-to-day activities of the Operations Division. These functions include: communications, emergency management, investigation, training, community relations, and special operations.

Primary Purpose of Position

 The position of Police Sergeant is a regular, and/or special detail position, providing general law enforcement and service related duties for the Georgia College & State University community. The position of Police Sergeant is a supervisory position, overseeing a squad of Police Officers and other personnel as assigned. To perform these duties, employees in this position must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, certification as a peace officer, pursuant to the rules of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.
Work involves knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, in addition to policies and procedures of the Board of Regents of the State of Georgia, Georgia College & State University, and the department of Public Safety. Employees assigned to this position must be able to demonstrate the ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making within the limits prescribed by laws, rules, regulation, policies, and procedures.
Work requires dedication to public service, which is often accompanied by emotional and/or physical stress from rapidly evolving events. The employee must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Serves as a first-line supervisor for a squad of Police Officers at the direction of the Lieutenant of Patrol and the Captain of Operations.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Scheduling and assigning duties/ responsibilities for the squad
- Facilitating squad coverage in the event of training, illness, vacation or other absence
- Providing guidance on policies and practices
- Facilitating standardized performance among personnel assigned to the squad
- Conduct daily shift briefing that includes pass-on information, roll call training and a review of campus events and activities
- Conduct evaluations for assigned officers
- Make recommendations in matters concerning discipline and commendations for assigned officers
- Notify immediate supervisor and/or Command Staff personnel of any issues or concerns that require immediate attention
- Review and approve incident and accident reports for assigned personnel to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Conduct and document routine inspections of assigned officer’s uniforms, equipment and vehicles

Conduct routine vehicle, foot, bicycle, and alternative patrol of Georgia College & State University properties, and the surrounding area pursuant to statutory jurisdictions.

Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check, pursuant to the regulations of Georgia College & State University, the Board of Regents Police Guidebook and recommendations from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. Requirements will include, at a minimum: an oral interview, a state and federal criminal history check, a nationwide sex offender search, a social security number check, a credit history check, a medical examination, a drug screening, a psychological screening, a polygraph examination, an employment history check, and the verification of at least three professional/personal references.
