Position Purpose: The Campus Public Safety Sergeant supports learning by supervising assigned Campus Public Safety Personnel and providing a safe and secure campus environment. The Campus Public Safety Sergeant coordinates the supervision and control of persons in or around campus buildings, facilities, and areas adjacent to the school sites.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Handles all emergency situations arising on campus, ranging from personal injuries, fires, threats to individuals, and all other emergency situations.
  • Understands, adheres to, and enforces all Campus Public Safety Office rules and regulations, policy and procedures, written memorandums, and verbal instructions issued by the Director of Campus Public Safety. Enforces all applicable and appropriate federal, state, and local laws. Reports all security and safety violations and hazards. Reports incidents of misbehavior to proper campus authority
  • Serves as a positive role model for students; provides general campus supervision. Provides visible patrols of the campus in an attempt to prevent crimes and incidents on campus
  • Directs campus visitors to proper authorities and prevents unlawful loitering; provides security for parking areas; supervises restroom and locker room areas.
  • Exercises physical control only to the extent reasonably necessary to maintain order, protect property, protect health and safety of students and faculty, or to maintain proper and appropriate conditions to learning.
  • Shift-related functions: Each shift will have an assigned sergeant. Each sergeant will be given duties to perform based on their respective shift (see below)
  • a. Day Shift: Scheduling officers, leave requests, addresses staff problems and recommend disciplinary action to Director, conduct performance appraisals, conduct roll call for that shift, oversea criminal investigations for that shift, recommend/implement training, oversea traffic enforcement, oversea parking enforcement, special events, and other duties as assigned by the Director or Designee.
  • b. Afternoon Shift: Scheduling officers, leave requests, addresses staff problems and recommend disciplinary action to Director, conduct performance appraisals, conduct roll call for that shift, oversea criminal investigations for that shift, recommend/implement training, oversea traffic enforcement, oversea parking enforcement, special events, and other duties as assigned by the Director or Designee.
  • c. Midnight Shift: Scheduling officers, leave requests, addresses staff problems and recommend disciplinary action to Director, conduct performance appraisals, conduct roll call for that shift, oversea criminal investigations for that shift, recommend/implement training, oversea traffic enforcement, oversea parking enforcement, special events, and other duties as assigned by the Director or Designee.
  • Essential Job Requirements:

    Education:

    • Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred.

    Experience:

    • Significant experience in Police Work, preferably in a campus setting. Must be Illinois certified police officer or the ability to obtain certification as prescribed by the university.
    • Working knowledge of campus regulations in connection with student conduct; laws pertaining to juveniles; controlled substance and their effects upon behavior, customer and activities indicative of undesirable groups

    Skills:

    • Working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, and local laws including the Campus Security Act of 1997.
    • Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and fairly.
    • Good communication skills; listening, writing, and speaking.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with faculty and staff.
    • Ability to interpret rules and regulations.
    • Working knowledge of the Illinois Vehicle Code and Illinois Criminal Statues.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Must be Illinois certified police officer or the ability to obtain certification as prescribed by the university.
    • Able to pass background check, psychological evaluation, and physical exam. Able to meet physical requirements, including: walking and standing for extended periods, running when necessary, climbing stairs, lifting up to 50 lbs with no assistance.
    • Minimum 21 years of age.
    • Valid Illinois Driver's license.
    • This position requires working: rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime as needed.
    • In the event of an emergency or crisis, may be called in to work or held over until released by the Director of Campus Public Safety or his/her designee.
