OVERVIEW : This is to announce an internal recruitment for the position of Police Officer Trainee leading to the classification of Police Officer following attainment of NC commissioned law enforcement officer status. Depending on the Department's staffing requirements, Duke University Police Department employees are hired for this position and have not attended Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).  Those who are selected will attended BLET and be sent to such training in paid status as a Police Officer Trainee.  Applicants for this position will be required to participate in an Applicant Assessment, a physical fitness test and may be subject to an individual interview by the Duke University Police Recruitment Division. All applicants selected for Police Officer Trainee / Police Officer employment are required to undergo a background investigation, medical exam, drug and psychological testing, and a polygraph examination.

Note : Individuals who already hold a commission as a North Carolina law enforcement officer or have current BLET certification may apply for lateral, non-trainee “Police Officer” employment using the same procedures outlined in this announcement.

REGULAR WORK SCHEDULE : While in BLET, subject to hours established by the supervising instructor

and/or the Department's Training and Recruiting Manager; upon assignment to the Uniform Patrol Division, rotating 12-hour shifts.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum: Eligibility to obtain North Carolina Campus Police certification including successful completion of a NC certified basic law enforcement training (BLET) program; a valid North Carolina driver’s license; minimum age limit of 20 years; corrected vision shall be at least 20/30 (Snellen) for both eyes together using only soft contact lenses (SCLs); uncorrected vision shall not be worse than 20/200 (Snellen) for both eyes together.

Preferred: Special preference for applicants who also possess one or more of the following: a) current or past certification as a law enforcement officer; b) certificate of completion from a State of North Carolina certified basic law enforcement training (BLET) program; c) college degree (associates or bachelors) in any field; d) prior experience as a law enforcement officer;

Perform a variety of duties as a uniformed Police Officer in patrolling campus and university health systems and enforcing laws.
