Job Description:
Summary:
The Police Investigator will be responsible for the criminal investigation and will investigate felonies and misdemeanors that require extended investigations. Work of this class requires regular public contact with a high degree of tact, judgment, technical knowledge, and sensitivity. The Investigator will work under the general guidance and discretion of the Executive Director of Public Safety and shall supervise criminal investigations to include crime scenes and reports
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborates fully with other units within the Department of Public Safety and agencies in other jurisdictions.
- Investigates all crimes assigned; questions witnesses, victims, and suspects to determine factual material and provide evidence of leads.
- Directs activities at the crime scene to assist victims; obtains clues, gathers and preserves evidence. Ensures that photographs and fingerprints of all persons arrested who are charged with violations are included in the records.
- Records progress of investigations and maintain information; files on crimes and suspects.
- Updates regularly his immediate superior about the progress of investigations and requests additional instruction when further progress appears possible.
- Communicates with the complainant or victim periodically to apprise him or her of the state of the investigation. Informs the complainant or victim in all cases that are resolved by arrest.
- Reviews departmental reports and other data pertaining to criminal cases such as auto theft, armed robbery, homicide, fraud, burglary, assault, arson, possession of controlled substance, and other related crimes, and determine patterns or trends.
- Aids police officers in the apprehension of suspects or offenders, and generally acts as liaison officer between the Department and all similar bureaus or units in other police departments and law enforcement agencies.
- Files application for and reviews all search warrants obtained by any officer or unit in the Department.
- Safeguard all property recovered; tags and stamps all lost, stolen, or found property and ensures that all evidence is properly tracked and disposed or released by courts.
- Assist in the preparation of case(s) for court. Prepares assigned cases for court and charges or responses to charge and procedures. Obtain court dispositions for campus cases.
- Helps in planning, conducting, and training citizens, students, and businesses in crime prevention programs. Assist in training officers, volunteers and members of other departments and outside agencies in criminal investigations related issues.
- Serve as the Mental Health Liaison between the Department of Public Safety and Student Health Services.
- Compile and submit data for Clery Reporting, as well as maintain daily crime and fire log.
- Answer and respond to calls for service.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be employed as a full-time certified police officer for a minimum of three (3) years.
- Supervisor or detective experience preferred.
- Current certification or ability to obtain certification in CPR and First Aid is required.
- Valid driver's license is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must be able to demonstrate skills in leadership, interpersonal skills.
- Understand and execute difficult oral and written directions.
- Prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
- Develop and sustain positive working relationships with other employees, outside agencies, and general public.
- Ability to utilize investigator techniques and equipment.
- Ability to operate and care for firearms, photography, and other equipment.
- Ability to resolve customers' complaints and concerns.
- Ability to drive motor vehicle.
- Ability to analyze crime data and determine criminal trends and patterns.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies
- Ability to read and write legibly, formulates investigative reports, and speaks clearly.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- Ability to work on a 24/7 basis when emergencies arise.
- Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with campus personnel, visitors and local law enforcement agencies.
- Ability to work with some degree of independence and to execute duties firmly, tactfully, and impartially.

The salary for each position is based on the grade/tier in which the position is placed, and the salary within the grade/tier is based on the number of years of related experience or number of years in the hiring rank.
