Job Description Summary:
The Division of Safety and Facilities aims to provide a safe and secure campus for all members of the university community through best-in-class technological and physical infrastructure, proactive assessment and analysis, and a caring team of professionals dedicated to upholding the university’s values with the highest degree of conscientiousness.
Reporting to the Security Operations Center (SOC), Manager; the Police Dispatcher is responsible for the operation of the police communications center for the GW Police Department. The core responsibilities of this role are to maintain and monitor communication with all university police officers via radio and telephone, to monitor university emergency telephone lines and fire, intrusion and panic alarms throughout the campus, to evaluate the severity of transmissions and alarms and take appropriate action in both emergency and non-emergency situations, and to dispatch officers to incidents, alarms, requests for assistance and emergencies. 
This position will also complete the blotter of campus events, will coordinate with local district forces in emergency situations with the District of Columbia Fire and Police Departments, and will contact members of the Campus Crisis Communications Team when necessary. This role will also monitor the video surveillance system and will provide general campus information to the public. It may be occasionally required to remain at the communications center past usual work shifts in the event of an emergency situation. 
Responsibilities include: 
  • Completing appropriate certification and on-going training for all duties in the role. 
  • Directing calls to appropriate GWPD personnel. 
  • Dispatches Officers to incidents, alarms, requests for assistance or service, and emergency situations on campus. 
  • Dispatches campus ambulance crews for medical emergencies on and off-campus. 
  • Monitors alarms from campus facilities and the GW Personal Alarm Locator software. 
  • Utilizing specific law enforcement systems that require a background check. 

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior certification with the APCO (Associate of Public Safety Communications Officials) is preferred
  • Documented work experience within a service-oriented organization.
  • Sufficient oral and written communication skills to effectively speak with callers and prepare job-related documentation.
