Job Description

Police Communications Supervisors are responsible for supervising an assigned shift of police radio dispatchers. Additional duties include, but are not limited to: performing the duties of a police radio dispatcher; answering operational and procedural questions; handling complaints from citizens and patrol; and perform other various complex duties related to the communications bureau, or as assigned.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates schedules, supervises, and reviews work of Police Radio Dispatchers on an assigned shift.
  • Oversees and monitors dispatch operations. Observes, trains, monitors, reviews, and corrects the work of Police Radio Dispatchers as needed to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures. 
  • Ensures emergency and non-emergency police, fire, and medical calls, as well as after-hours requests for University services are effectively processed and an appropriate field unit and/or emergency call out is completed. 
  • Monitors incoming phone call volumes and answers incoming lines when calls are excessively high or during staff shortages. 
  • Operates radio and computer aided dispatch terminals to interact with and dispatch field personnel. 
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques for quality assurance purposes. 
  • Assists with employee development of skills and abilities, and works with employees to correct deficiencies and identify corrective actions. 
  • Responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of multiple technology systems required for operations; troubleshoots minor equipment problems and orders repairs. 
  • Recommends procedural changes to Manager, setting up approved changes and communicates changes to all staff affected.
  • Attends work meetings outside normal working hours. 
  • Assists the Manager with evaluating, developing, and implementing standard operating procedures to improve operational effectiveness.
  • Completes requests and affidavits for audio recordings.
  • Manages staffing levels to include covering unscheduled leave and vacation.
  • Completes performance reviews; assists in recommendations on disciplinary actions; collaborates with the Manager and other supervisors on training; recognizes high performance and provides positive re-enforcement; manages and deals effectively with marginal performers. 
  • Performs investigations relating to internal and/or external complaints; makes disciplinary recommendations and counsels’ subordinates as needed. 
  • Notifies command staff of incidents as appropriate. 
  • Changes priorities as needed, to ensure tasks are completed timely.
  • Performs as a Communications Training Officer for new employees as needed, and provides recommendations for the training program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years' experience as a public safety dispatcher OR, equivalent position for a public safety agency, OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.  Must possess or attain certificate as Terminal Operator within six (6) months of hire and renew every two (2) years.


Desired Qualifications

  • Two years’ experience as an ASU Police Radio Dispatcher
  • Experience in supervisory practices and principles and/or a trainer in a police dispatch environment
  • Evidence of effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in training employees and/or completing performance evaluations 

Working Environment

  • Work is performed in a Police Communications Center environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 
  • All activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting. 
  • May be required to work mandatory overtime and a rotating shift as required, work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage of the emergency dispatch system. 
  • Respond to texts for emergency staffing.
  • Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device using repetitive hand/eye movements
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, scanner, copy and fax machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement
  • Visual and muscular dexterity to operate communications equipment (computer-aided dispatch equipment, fire alarms, personal computers, telephones, and radio)
  • Concentrate on and complete tasks in the presence of distractions.
  • Sit for extended periods of time.
  • Wear a headset and operate a foot pedal or transmit button. 
  • Move light objects for short distances and/or lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

Additional Background Requirements:
ASU Police Department conducts pre-employment screening for all positions.
