Then join us at The Dawes Arboretum!! We are actively recruiting for a full-time Plant Records Coordinator to be a part of our amazing Curation department! The Plant Records Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the inventory of the living plant collections of The Arboretum by overseeing the plant records database. This includes accessioning, working with the taxonomy and nomenclature of the plants, inventorying, as well as assisting with the Dawes herbarium. This position is also responsible for creating and installing display labels. Job Responsibilities • Maintain accurate plant records in the database by entering new accessions, de-accessions, notes, images, sources and other data updates. • Create and install all necessary labels for plants in the collection. Assist with the production of other in-house signage as necessary. • Provide tech support and assistance to all users of the plant records software and equipment. • Learn the basics of taxonomy and plant nomenclature, including scientific, common, and trade names and their usage. Learn plant identification techniques for native, non-native and cultivated taxa. • Perform plant inventories using the mobile database and field equipment. • Map new plants, garden beds and infrastructure with GPS equipment. • Maintain and update GIS data pertaining to The Arboretum base maps and plantings utilizing ArcMap and ArcGIS Online.
Qualifications
• Associate’s degree in Plant Science, Horticulture, Environmental Studies, Botany, Taxonomy or related field, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred. • Familiarity with botanical nomenclature, plant records, mapping software and horticulture practices. • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail in order to maintain accurate and detailed records. • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal). • Proficiency with plant records databases and/or GIS. • Demonstrated ability to develop, manage and coordinate multiple activities and projects. • Ability to work outside in any type of weather conditions as well as weekends and evenings as needed.
