JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Post-doctoral Scholar position is available in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, co-mentored by Dr. Kari Peter and Dr. Tami Collum (U.S. Department of Agriculture- Agricultural Research Service [USDA-ARS]) to investigate persistent and emerging diseases of pome fruits. The incumbent will conduct research at the USDA-ARS Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, WV and the Fruit Research and Extension Center (FREC) in Biglerville, PA.

This position is offered for a two-year term, with the initial appointment offered as a one-year appointment, with reappointment for a second-year contingent on successful performance. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in Plant Pathology, Microbiology, or related discipline, and be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met for completion of the Ph.D. prior to the effective date of hire.

The incumbent’s primary responsibility will be to characterize changes to the apple flower microbiome in response to different disease management strategies and evaluate alternative products efficacy in controlling fire blight in greenhouse, experimental orchard plots and/or commercial pome fruit growing systems. Knowledge of integrated tree fruit disease management, plant pathology, general molecular biology, DNA extraction techniques, and microbiome data analysis are desirable. In addition to conducting research, the incumbent is expected to have a role in training students and/or support staff, keeping records related to research projects, synthesizing data, presenting results at local and national conferences, and preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts.

The home location of work will be at the USDA-ARS Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, WV. Some in-state and regional travel will be expected. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties.  A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
