Position Summary
The Washington University School of Medicine Operations & Facilities Management Department provides a range of services for the medical campus in a customer-focused, efficient, and sustainable manner. Operations & Facilities Management maintains 61 university buildings and provides operational, planning, and construction services to over 8.3 million gross square feet of space. We will open three new facilities between 2023 and 2025 with over 1.5M BGSF. In addition, the School of Medicine continues expanding its reach on and off campus in teaching, clinical care, and research. Our team plays a vital and important role in delivering care, research, and services.
The Interiors and Signage Planner is responsible for coordinating the scope, budget, and schedule related to small and large signage and wayfinding projects in new construction and building renovations as part of the WUSM facilities team. The position will serve as the subject matter expert on signage design and requirements. Works closely and coordinates with team members, consultants, stakeholders, and signage vendors at all levels of schematic design to design documents, through the construction phase to acceptance and move-in. Works independently with minimal supervision.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Works with vendors to provide preliminary and conceptual signage planning and programming, including cost estimating for WUSM facilities project managers and planners as well as departmental customers as required.
  • Leads coordination of WUSM signage specifications, documents, monitoring progress to ensure timely completion of deliverables.
  • Helps determine appropriate signage solutions and makes relevant recommendations or implements them internally.
  • Acts as the owner’s representative for the interior and exterior signage scope of a project.
  • Works with vendors, clients, project managers, and other planners during new construction and renovation projects to ensure signage is on budget and in place at time of occupancy.
  • Communicates with management team regarding efficiency and accuracy as well as any progress and/or delays.
  • Develops and refines internal signage process, including intake of project needs as well as selection of appropriate vendor for project type. Pilots applications to ensure performance and capacity plans meet expectations, including performing query writing and optimization.
  • Works with the Director of Interior & Relocation Planning and the Senior Director of Capital Construction to maintain and update the WUSM signage and wayfinding standards program.
  • Responsible to become familiar/knowledgeable with the University brand standards.
  • Collects, manages and keeps an updated spreadsheet of all WUSM signage projects for tracking purposes. Provides annual signage cost analysis reports.
  • Ensures all signage is consistent with the WUSM brand. Work with WashU Medicine Marketing & communications for approvals and compliance with the current brand awareness.
  • Produces electronic illustrations, layouts and digital images as required.
  • Conducts planning meetings with customers and vendors as required to clarify needs and develop specifications for new projects.
  • Manages small signage requests to replace/update existing project or departmental signs.
  • Participates in wayfinding and signage task forces.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience in graphic design, interior design, and/or architecture.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and project or program planning experience plus a minimum of six years of relevant experience required in medical or facilities management and planning experience required.

Salary Range
$70,300.00 - $120,000.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
