Job Summary
The primary function of the Pipefitter (Sprinkler Fitter) is to install, repair, test, maintain, or alter all wet/dry sprinkler systems on campus. This position interacts with campus customers, supervision, peers and employees to create a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the University campus.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and perform needed repairs on sprinkler systems, pumps, and valves.
  • Install new sprinkler systems, sprinkler equipment, and pumps.
  • Perform monthly pump churn tests and enter collected data into AIM.
  • Perform quarterly pump tests and document results.
  • Ensure on a quarterly basis that dry systems are functioning properly.
  • Perform yearly visual assessment of internal piping for foreign organic and inorganic material.
  • Perform yearly visual inspection of each sprinkler head.
  • Inspect and maintain all sprinkler head cabinets.
  • Internal inspection and maintenance of check valves.
  • Perform manual testing on all gate and control valves.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Physical Demands
1. May work in extreme weather conditions.
2. May be exposed to potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
3. May be exposed to chemicals, heavy dust, loud noise, chemical fumes, welding torches, and other general conditions.
4. May have to use respiratory protection, and protective clothing and proper PPE equipment as needed.
5. May work around radiation and/or biohazardous chemical with proper training.
6. A Pipefitter/Refrigeration Mechanic is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Certificate of completion of Pipetrade apprenticeship under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program.
    OR
    Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Pipefitter or other Pipetrade classification with a minimum of five (5) years (60 months) of actual work in the trade, which may have included apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Pipefitters, Pipefitter Welders, Refrigeration Mechanics, Temperature Control Mechanics, Sprinkler Fitters, and/or Oil Burner Mechanics.
  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at the time of hire.
  • Completion of a certified sprinkler fitter apprenticeship program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CFC License

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of sprinkler systems, jockey pumps, building pumps, NFPA practices and testing procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of the sprinkler fitter trade, in the use of tools, rigging, and lifting equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and OSHA regulations for sprinkler fitter work.
  • A working knowledge of OSHA safety procedures.
  • Excellent math skills in the use of layout, measurements, radius, and areas.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3309 - Pipefitter (Refrigeration Mechanic) position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. The starting salary for this position is based on the prevailing rate, which is currently $50.35/hour.
