Position Summary

The Piano Technician is responsible for and maintains the piano and harpsichord inventory (100 pianos, 3 harpsichords) of the Lamont School of Music. The quality of keyboard instruments and their conditions are part of the critical operation of Lamont as it relates to teaching, practice, and performance on keyboard instruments. Additionally, this position plays a significant role in the public face of the university, both through its support of Lamont and for touring artists performing in the Newman Center. Lamont is an all-Steinway school.

The projected start date for this position is mid-August 2024.

Essential Functions

  • Tune and regulate concert pianos to the highest standard
  • Tune classroom, rehearsal, studio, and practice room pianos and harpsichords
  • Perform complete cleaning, regulation, voicing, and other maintenance of pianos on a rotating schedule, and maintain records of all piano maintenance
  • Rebuild pianos as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Complete understanding of the workings of pianos and harpsichords
  • Highly specialized skills in piano maintenance and repair
  • Ability to understand and address needs of different constituencies (e.g., guest artists, faculty, students) and work cooperatively
  • Plan, organize, and manage resource or processes to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals
  • Knowledge and skill in using standard technologies in the industry
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

Required Qualifications

  • Certificate/diploma in Piano Technology or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in tuning, regulating, and rebuilding pianos

Preferred Qualifications

  • Member of the Piano Technicians Guild with Registered Piano Technician status
  • Training as a Steinway technician. Certification will be required within the first three years in the position.
  • Experience in preparing pianos for concerts and recordings
  • Experience as a technician at a college or university
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music

Work Schedule

Typically normal business hours that require flexibility to include occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary to accommodate performances and rehearsals for Lamont, the Newman Center, and facility rentals such as the Friends of Chamber Music.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 7.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $26.56-$31.17.
