In support of this mission, the Department is home to a diverse collection of keyboard instruments ranging from its 40 grand pianos, 19 upright pianos, fortepianos, and harpsichords, to its world-class collection of historical keyboards at the Cornell Center for Historical Keyboards (https://historicalkeyboards.as.cornell.edu/ ).

The Piano Technician holds sole responsibility for evaluating, tuning, and maintaining the keyboards. The Piano Technician evaluates these instruments and develops short- and long-term repair and maintenance plans to insure proper working order. Essential functions include tuning, repairing, voicing, and restoring a wide array of instruments and working closely with the Events Manager to plan events.  Work with faculty, especially the piano faculty, to make sure their needs are met and gather and respond to feedback from students. The Piano Technician maintains the instruments in studios, classrooms, offices, and practice rooms. This is a self-guided position with limited oversight and a high-level of responsibility.

This position is 30 hours/week, 12 months/year, with the occasional need for evening and weekend work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of degree program in piano technology from university or recognized trade/vocational/technical school with 4 to 6 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Registered Piano Technician (RPT) of Piano Technician’s Guild.
  • Expert knowledge of materials, construction techniques, and experience in the renovations and rebuilding of pianos.
  • Demonstrated ability to regulate and voice pianos.
  • Must be able to demonstrate aural tuning ability, but electronic tuning on a day-to-day basis is encouraged.
  • Familiarity with and ability to tune in historical temperaments.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communications skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and to work in fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends, for events.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with and interest in unique, historical keyboards.
  • Knowledge of harpsichord and fortepiano tuning and familiarity with and ability to tune historical temperaments.
