Physicist Research Scientist

Updated: over 1 year ago
Location: Berkeley, CALIFORNIA
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Physicist Research Scientist (Career or Career-Track) to join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Accelerator Physics Group (APG).

ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades thanks also to the multiple upgrades that the ALS accelerator complex underwent over the years. In particular, the ALS storage ring is currently undergoing a large-scale accelerator upgrade (ALS-U) that will provide a two-orders of magnitude increase in brightness endowing the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team and in particular the ALS Accelerator Physics Group!

This APG position includes responsibilities and active participation in all the activities of the Group, including ALS operation and the development of near, mid and long term ALS upgrades. As a member of the APG, you will also actively participate with the appropriate level of commitment in the ALS-U project with responsibilities in the physics-related activities for the new accelerator and, in the years to come, its commissioning.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to ensuring that the ALS accelerator complex is operating with optimal performance as well as safely, and reliably.
  • Pursue Accelerator Physics studies towards optimizing the performance of ALS.
  • Participate in the implementation of planned upgrades effectively and in carrying out accelerator R&D to develop future upgrades. Participate in the preparation of funding proposals for accelerator R&D activities.
  • Participate in the development of hardware and/or software tools (diagnostics, modeling, operational analysis, etc.)  for the ALS Accelerators.
  • Collaboratively work with physicists, engineers, and technical staff in support of ALS operations and improvements.
  • Prepare scientific papers and publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research at seminars and conferences.
  • Adhere to Environment, Safety, and Health (EH&S) policies and practices.
  • Follow and actively implement the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) on everyday activities and work execution.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Accelerator Physics and, some experience for the career-track case, or several years of work experience for career case, in a few of the following areas:
    • Accelerator operations.
    • Experimental beam physics studies.
    • Development and implementation of new capabilities on an existing accelerator.
    • Development of beam diagnostic systems.
    • Charged particle beam modeling.
    • Theoretical investigation of beam behavior.
  • Published record of research in Accelerator Physics appropriate for this career level.
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with members of LBNL Divisions as required by work assignments including other scientists, post-docs, students, technical and administrative support staff.
  • Ability of programming in various software languages to develop applications in support of the operation of the facility and of accelerator physics studies and R&D activities.
  • Ability to effectively pursue work activities both in an independent manner as well as in a team while maintaining a respectful, pleasant and constructive attitude in the interactions.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with an operational synchrotron light source.
  • Experience with operational linacs and/or injectors.

Notes:

  • This position will be hired as a full-time, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs OR a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
