Position Focus:

As a member of the Department of Dermatology clinical care team and under the supervision of a licensed Dermatologist, this position provides medical care services to an ambulatory Dermatology population in a clinical care setting while practicing within the scope and boundaries of State regulations. Conducts complete physicals, provides treatment, and counsels patients.


Essential Duties

1. Examines patients to collect information about their physical condition. 2. Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination. 3. Conducts complete physical examinations; provides medical evaluation and treatment to patients; develops treatments plans and monitors patient’s progress. 4. Advises patients on results of laboratory tests and recommends referrals to specialists or other medical facilities. 5. Collaborates with physicians, nurses, counselors and other medical staff to provide the best medical care. 6. Provides preventive health practices to patients to maintain and improve health and prevent illness. 7. Coordinates patient care including ordering of laboratory tests and radiographic studies. 8. Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education or Master’s Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to interact positively and effectively with patients and staff. Have patience, compassion and the ability to listen to patients with a high degree of cultural competence. Capable of operating autonomously with minimal direction. Hands-on team player. Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Solid working knowledge and demonstrated ability with EHRs/EMRs, preferably Epic. 


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent observational skills and the ability to describe skin lesions accurately. Ability to take a detailed history, perform a complete physical examination and synthesize cogent patient assessments and plans.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong knowledge base in general adult and pediatric medicine. Possessing the desire and being open to an on-the-job training period to acquire the necessary knowledge base and skills in order to practice clinical dermatology in an independent manner with an appropriate amount of supervision and support from departmental dermatology faculty.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability to work within an organization, particularly in an academic medical center. Possessing a high level of ethics and integrity in professional matters and sensitivity for confidentiality.


Required Licenses or Certifications

CT APRN license (or eligible) with ANA certification OR CT PA license (or eligible).Prescriptive privileges (or eligible) in the State of Connecticut, federal DEA license and CT DCP license for prescription of controlled substances.


Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional slight lifting. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds when transferring a patient from chair or wheelchair to exam table and turning patients for examination. Proper body mechanics must be used when maneuvering patients.
