Physician Assistant - Specialist, Non-Tenure Track

The Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer's & Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA) has an open, fully funded Physician Assistant faculty position is available (https://biggsinstitute.org/ ).

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Physician Assistant to support the San Antonio Heart and Mind Study (SAHMS), an observational study examining cardiovascular risk factors that affect brain health in our San Antonio community. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to impactful dementia research and to gain valuable experience in clinical and community-based research methods.

Education: A bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science directly related to the duties of the position. Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program and Texas licensure is required.

Experience: Working knowledge in observational or clinical trial research protocols is preferred. Fluency in Spanish is not required but strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work on a day-to-day basis, as well as within schedule constraints.
  • Ability to handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Close attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, including preparing and writing memorandums, letters, and other official correspondence.
  • Ability to work well independently with research participants and staff with minimal supervision.
  • Possesses strong skills for multitasking, meeting competing deadlines, prioritizing, and supporting the investigator team.
  • Strong ethics and professionalism.

    • Job Duties

    • Supports the investigative team in planning, evaluating, implementing, and documenting scientific research
    • Actively screens and enrolls potential study participants
    • Obtains complete medical history from research participants
    • Performs blood draws, physical and neurological examinations, cardiac assessments, and organizes and presents the physical data
    • Willing to perform or learn how to perform lumbar punctures
    • Instructs and counsels participants on various medical-related subjects and provides follow-up and health maintenance care to research participants per established protocols
    • Develops and maintains study source documents and Case Report Forms, prepares study timelines, and reports adverse events to the PI when appropriate
    • Organizes and leads case presentations for formal and electronic consensus reviews
    • Provides research participants with return of results
    • Cross-trains to perform study assessments at participants’ homes and occasionally conducts home visits
    • Maintains excellent communication with the investigative team
    • Helps ensure compliance with all federal and local regulations, as well as regulatory processes
    • Performs all other duties as assigned
