Summary

The Pre-Operative Physician Assistant will perform peri-operative risk assessment for multiple surgical departments and surgical subspecialties across Michigan Medicine.  The PA exercises autonomy in medical decision making while maintaining the PA-Physician relationship within the scope of practice.

Responsibilities*

As part of the Pre-Operative team, the PA will:

  • Consultative visit with patients to obtain a detailed surgical history.
  • Perform physical examination and present pertinent data to faculty and/ or medical staff.
  • Provide specialized education regarding disease-based and perioperative education/instructions for patients and their family.
  • Review possible risks of proposed surgical procedure while obtaining surgical consents (including blood and photography consent and optional tissue research).
  • Provide prescriptions and instructions for medications/medical supplies necessary for the pre-operative period.
  • Refer the patient to various internal and external settings to complete pre-operative testing and risk assessment. This may include direct communication with ancillary services and/or in-house Anesthesia team.
  • Address patient SDOH, assess readiness for surgery, and collaborate with surgical services, SDOH resources and research resources to benefit patient satisfaction, safety and education. 
  • Advise patients concerning diet, hygiene, normal growth and development and methods for prevention of disease.
  • Compile and record detailed narrative case evaluations and provide statistical summaries of services rendered.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion or the credentialing and privileging process.


Required Qualifications*
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission Education for the Physician Assistant  (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • AHA Approved BLS

Desired Qualifications*
  • 2-3 years of clinical experience as a Physician Assistant.
  • One (1) year of demonstrated experience in evaluating and caring for preoperative surgical patients is preferred.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License
  • Current DEA registration
  • One (1) year of demonstrated experience in a comprehensive medicine setting such as internal medicine or emergency medicine 
  • Documented continuous professional development activities
  • Demonstrated ability to apply evidence-based clinical knowledge into the patient care setting via protocols, standards, and outcome measurements.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, and as part of a collaborative team. 
  • Demonstrate open-minded perspective and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Hours per week: Full time, based on 40-hour schedule

Primary Location: Taubman Center Michigan Medicine Pre-Op Clinic

Secondary Location: Open to coverage at satellite Michigan Medicine Pre-Operative Clinics


Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.


Background Screening
