Summary

The Department of Surgery is seeking a qualified candidate for an Advanced Practice Provider in an acute care clinical setting to provide medical care to patients under the direction of a physician. Candidate will be required to provide clinical excellence, scholarly enthusiasm, and a track record of excellent clinical performance. The provider will have direct patient care responsibilities.


Job Purpose

Provides advanced patient care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.


Job Duties
  • Obtains detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provides follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicates with physicians, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Collaborates with providers, and practice staff in identifying appropriate patients for care management.
  • Promotes a positive work environment with a team-based approach through supportive and respectful interactions with peers, staff, and faculty.
  • Directs patient care responsibilities including daily rounds, detailed history and physical examinations, patient and family discussions, documentation, assist with working-up, diagnosing and treating emergent surgical conditions with care plan development and implementation.
  • Coordinates the transition from inpatient to outpatient care for patients with emergent surgical conditions.
  • Manages patients in the outpatient setting including telemedicine and in person clinic visits.
  • Orders and interpret appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests in coordination with faculty Supervising Physician.
  • Orders X-rays, CT, MRI, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures
  • Administers such therapeutic procedures as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care.
  • Delegates scheduling and clinical tasks to a medical assistant.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Physician Assistant:

 

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
  • Experience Required: None required, one to two years in a hospital/clinical setting preferred.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

 

Nurse Practitioner:

 

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Nursing. 
  • Experience Required: None required, one to two years in a hospital/clinical setting preferred.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Texas APRN license. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
