Physical Security Technician I - UTPD 

Description: Technicians will work daily to assess assigned duties related to hardware or software issues related to physical security (alarms/access controls). With input from the Director of Physical Security, and the Lead Technician, the Technicians will receive assigned tasks and make necessary repairs to physical security devices or necessary adjustments to management software to address non-functioning or improperly functioning devices on campus. When not assigned to these tasks, Technicians will visit current or on-going construction or reconstruction sites to ensure the proper installation and labeling of campus physical security devices and testing of those devices before substantial completion of projects is achieved.

 



Qualifications

 

Responsibilities:

  • Both the Lead Technician and Technicians will work with campus end users and provide training and guidance relative to proper use of installed physical security equipment.
  • Perform installation and maintenance of access control equipment including electrified door hardware, and alarm systems including intrusion detection panels, motion sensors, duress buttons and keypads. Install wire paths, conduct wire pulls and terminations for existing and new access control, and alarm system installations.
  • Document, correct and report any issues with equipment or installation of existing access control and intrusion detection systems
  • Document recommended repairs and upgrades and develop preventive maintenance checklist and schedule for each installation. Evaluate cost effective equipment repairs versus purchasing new equipment and make recommendations to supervisory staff.
  • Implement and manage a preventive maintenance program for physical security hardware across UTK. Provide direct support to the Central Alarm support team in troubleshooting access control issues. Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, service manuals and other reference material to facilitate the repair, maintenance, and diagnosis of electrical wiring, circuitry, hardware and ancillary devices related to campus system. Work with facility managers and Facilities Services shops to troubleshoot and determine causes of access control controller or voltage supply issues. Determine and report any issues that are found to be caused by software or system configuration. Perform other assigned comparable or transient duties, which are within the area of knowledge and skills in this job description.

Position Qualifications: 

  • A high school diploma
  • Valid TN Driver’s License
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in electronics and industrial electricity or a combination of experience and trade school.
  • Experience with fire alarm and access control system repair and installation.
  • A working knowledge of electronic systems in general.
  • A good working knowledge of life safety alarm and access control system operation, repair and installation practices.
  • The ability to solve technical electronic problems and instruct others in the installation and repair of electronic systems and components.
  • The ability to read blueprints and determine materials and resources needed to complete projects efficiently and on schedule.
  • As OSHA mandated licensures for field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Vocational or technical training, Industrial/Security Electronic and Control Systems Maintenance
  • Vocational education in electronics or industrial electricity or equivalent experience working with electronics in an industrial electricity environment.
  • Knowledge of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of Gallagher controls is preferred but not required.

Process:
