Physical Security Technician III - Public Safety Technology

Office of Information Technology

This position directly supports the technology needs of Brown University’s Department of Public Safety, a sworn, fully-functioning law enforcement agency operating 24/7 to protect and serve the Brown community.


The Physical Security Technician III has over 4 years of proven work experience; having demonstrated knowledge, skill, and success in the troubleshooting, repair, installation, and programming of Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems. This position has advanced technical expertise gained through work experience and requires self-motivation including sound judgment as this position works mostly independently.


The Physical Security Technician III uses their advanced technical expertise in Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems to accomplish the following primary responsibilities:

  • perform escalated troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on physical security equipment including supporting all physical aspects of the Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems.

  • review application journals and event logs to determine whether physical security equipment or alarms are functioning and/or resolve problems.

  • troubleshoot Support Requests for the Brown Community, the Department of Public Safety Staff and Police Officers including Dispatcher operating within the Mission Critical Primary Communications Center and Backup Communications Center.

  • assist Application Administrators within the Public Safety Technology team by providing hands-on support during troubleshooting.

  • provide assistance and guidance to other Physical Security Technicians.

Typical day-to-day operational responsibilities supported by the Physical Security Technician III includes:

  • daily review of unassigned Support Requests in queue and assign as appropriate.

  • responding to Support Requests and making necessary repairs.

  • periodically reviewing open Support Requests to ensure resolution in a timely manner and escalating aged Support Requests as necessary.

  • communicating effectively with customers and providing resolution or follow-up.

  • performing daily checks of the Video Security System and Access Control System to ensure that all devices are functioning; documenting malfunctioning devices via a Support Request.

  • ensuring sufficient service inventory is available on-site to support the repair of the Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems across the University by coordinating with management when additional inventory needs to be purchased.

  • at the discretion of the Physical Security Technician, Support Requests that can’t be resolved in a timely manner through in-house Physical Security Technicians, may be routed to approved Security Integrator Contractors leveraged for Staff Augmentation.


While in the field supporting the Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems, the Physical Security Technician III should look to identify equipment in need of repair and document those repair opportunities via a Support Request for scheduling; along with looking to identify and make recommendations for improvements.


All support requests and tasks shall be performed in accordance with Industry Best Practices, Public Safety Technology Standard Operating Procedures, and Public Safety Technology Technical and Design Standards.


Team Responsibilities - Physical Security Technicians:
Physical Security Technicians within the Public Safety Technology team are the on-site hands of the team. The Technicians support all physical aspects of the Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems across the University. A significant and critical responsibility of the Technicians includes performing troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on the Building Security Systems as these systems are designed for the safety and security of Brown University Assets and the Brown University Community. Building Security Systems includes but are not limited to IP Video Security Systems, Access Control Systems, and Panic Alarm and Intrusion Alarm Systems.


In addition to supporting Building Security Systems, Physical Security Technicians assist in supporting all physical aspects of the Public Safety Technology used by the Department of Public Safety. Public Safety Technology includes MDT In-Vehicle Computers, LTE Trunk Routers, 800mhz / 400mhz portable and base radios (excludes repeaters and their associated antennas), FirstNet ATT and EPTT, Siren System including auditable mass notification, Smart Campus technologies including License Plate Recognition, Blue Light Emergency Phones, Dynamic Alarm Mapping, AVL Mapping, and technologies within the Public Safety Primary Communications Center and Backup Communications Center.


Position Reporting:
The Physical Security Technician III will report to the Associate Director of Public Safety Technology.
 

Position Classification: On-Site
Due to the nature of this position, on-site work is required to perform service, maintenance, and repairs of the Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems across the University.

Position Location and Typical Work Schedule:
This position will be required to work on-site 5 days per week.
Core Business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm.
Flexibility in schedule and hours is required occasionally; including days, nights, and weekends. This is dependent upon break/fix, site walks, on-site projects, University Campus events, and business needs of the department.


Travel in the city is required using a provided Brown service vehicle (not take home) and at times, to other Brown Campuses. Brown University has multiple buildings throughout the City of Providence RI and a few remote campuses in RI.


On-Call Requirements:
This position will participate in an OIT Public Safety Technology Team on-call rotation schedule which is dedicated to the support of the University’s Department of Public Safety. The OIT Public Safety Technology Team on-call consists of answering basic Tier-1 support calls from the Department of Public Safety and performing basic troubleshooting via the on-call Standard Operating Procedure. Tier-2 and Tier-3 issues may need to be escalated within the OIT Public Safety Technology Team or other OIT Teams. In some cases, the OIT Public Safety Technology Team on-call team-member may be the same person assigned to handle the Tier-2 and Tier-3 issue type within the team. While on-call, one must be available to answer calls/emails after normal working hours and on weekends/holidays depending on the rotation order.


Immunizations Requirements:
This position is subject to immunization requirements. Due to the nature of work, some buildings require immunizations to enter specific areas, applicants must be willing to complete initial immunizations and any follow-up/boosters.


CJIS Requirements:
This position is subject to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) requirements. Due to the confidential, sensitive nature of information this position may encounter, applicants must be willing to allow for a Background Investigation initiated by Brown Public Safety.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • 4+ years of experience as an in-field technician with hands-on experience in the troubleshooting, repair, and installation of Public Safety Technology and Building Security Systems.

  • Proficiency in reading and understanding security floorplans, architectural, and network diagrams .

  • Lead experience preferred but not required

The following technology experience is preferred:

  • Access Control and Alarm Management Systems including Card Readers, Panic Alarms, Intrusion Alarms, and Intercoms.

  • Video Security Systems (CCTV) including IP and Analog Security Cameras.

  • Basic Computer Networking and Telecommunications

  • Software House - Access Control and Alarm Management Systems

  • Inovonics - Panic Alarms

  • DSC (Digital Security Controls) - Intrusion Alarm Systems

  • 2N and AiPhone - Intercoms

  • Genetec Security Center - Video Management Systems

  • Axis Communications - Video Security Cameras

The following certifications preferred but not required:

  • Software House - CCURE 9000 Installer Certified

  • Genetec Security Center Certified

Qualifications

Successful completion of a criminal background check is required. In addition completion of Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check is also required.
