What does this role do?

  • Responsible for all aspects of safety in identified research spaces throughout the campus and have the clearly articulated goal of creating and sustaining an accident-free workplace.
  • policy and procedure development; dissemination; training; enforcement; program administration and oversight.
  • Safety-related research and staff/researchers oversight in safety-related issues.
  • The Safety Officer is also responsible for developing/co-developing training programs for users (both safety- and non-safety-related).
  • Responsible for helping to develop and subsequently implementing safe protocols for the handling, storage, and disposal of energetic materials (explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics), high speed, turbine equipment use, high pressure vessel use, stored energy use, and other safety related hazards that might be in campus research spaces and not covered by other safety specialists.
  • Identify the engineering controls required before the start-up of research involving hazardous materials to ensure the safety of researchers, other building occupants, and the community.
  • The physical safety specialist has the authority to intervene in any situation deemed to be an imminent danger to personnel or the environment.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree with 1-2 years of progressive safety experience in an academic laboratory space.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or science with an emphasis on safety and industrial hygiene.
  • Experience in program monitoring, procedure development, and control systems required.
  • Awareness of EPA/OSHA standards and federal, state, national fire and life safety code required.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other safety certification or the ability to obtain after hire.
