This position will be filled at either the Process & Sampling Technician 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory and support the National Science and Security Mission as an experienced physical metrologist in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL). The MP&CL is an ISO 17025 accredited calibration laboratory providing NIST traceable calibrations and metrology program support to LANL Programs and organizations. We currently maintain National Voluntary Laboratory Program (NVLAP) accreditation in torque, temperature, vibration, and mass. This position will be filled at either the Process & Sampling Technician 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Metrologists are responsible for performing and documenting calibrations in one or more assigned calibration areas (e.g. dimensional, electrical, and physical), providing metrology support to the MP&CL engineers, and mentoring less experienced staff. This position is with the MP&CL physical calibration lab, however; there are opportunities to provide calibration support the physical and/or electrical calibration labs.

Process & Sampling Technician 4 ($64,400 - $102,300)

The successful candidate will be an experienced metrologist who will have advanced knowledge of physical calibration concepts and principles (e.g. mass, temperature, humidity, accelerometers, pressure, force, etc…) including measurement uncertainty; perform simple-to-complex calibrations in the lab and in the field; maintain calibration Standards; independently develop/revise calibration procedures; mentor less experience staff to develop; demonstrate sound decision-making and leadership in support of calibration quality.

Process & Sampling Technician 5 ($77,300 - $126,000)

At the higher level, the successful candidate will have expert-level knowledge of calibration concepts and principles and serve as the subject matter expert in their area/s of expertise, be able to independently calculate measurement uncertainty, perform simple-to-highly complex physical calibrations that may include developing new measurement techniques and procedures.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience performing the set up, operation, calibration, and/or adjustment of a wide variety of physical measurement equipment using written technical procedures

  • Experience accurately preparing and reporting calibration results using the MS Office suite and calibration-related Laboratory Information Management Systems.

  • Knowledge of and experience applying fundamental math, physics, and problem solving principals to calibration activities including data analysis and troubleshooting.

  • Experience maintaining Physical secondary standards or instrumentation

Additional Job Requirements for Process and Sampling Technician 5:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced experience validating and authenticating advanced measurements and/or experimental results

  • Demonstrated advanced ability to develop in-depth calibration and/or measurement techniques for new or one-of-a-kind instruments, equipment, and/or systems

  • Experience developing defensible measurement uncertainties using the appropriate rigor and incorporating all contributing factors

  • Demonstrated ability to set up, conduct, and/or report proficiency tests and inter-laboratory comparison

Education/Experience at lower level:

Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 7 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a government, military, or commercial calibration laboratory

  • Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" Clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship

  • Knowledge of IndySoft or other calibration-related Laboratory Information Management Systems

  • Certified Calibration Technician certification

  • Ability to occasionally travel
