Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.
Berkeley Lab is leading a new Energy Frontier Research Center—Center for High Precision Patterning Science (CHiPPS)—that brings together a cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to advance precision patterning science for next generation microelectronics. The postdoctoral researcher will lead the synthesis and assembly of novel metal–organic photoresists that are activated by extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation to generate and confine chemical patterns at the nanoscale for subsequent pattern transfer into various substrates.
The Postdoctoral researcher will be mentored by Brett Helms (Energy Sciences Area, including the Materials Sciences Division and the Molecular Foundry) and Sam Blau (Energy Technologies Area). These activities will be supported and enriched by other researchers in the EFRC, whose efforts encompass advanced theory and characterization.
What You Will Do:
- Provide technical experience in organic or inorganic synthesis, self-assembly, and crystallization.
- Provide leadership in design and development of next-generation metal–organic hybrid photoresists for EUV lithography.
- Advance and apply techniques, generally spectroscopic or microscopic in nature, to the study pattern generation in photoresists upon exposure to EUV radiation.
- Elucidate structure–property relationships governing pattern generation.
- Play a key role in maintaining a robust and inclusive group and safety culture.
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to scientific research papers, reports, review articles; present oral reports.
What is Required:
- Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science and engineering.
- Experience in synthesis and characterization of organic, inorganic, or hybrid molecules and materials.
- Experience in molecular self-assembly or crystallization of nanostructured materials.
- Demonstrated knowledge in solution-phase processing and structural characterization of thin films.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct and perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to represent and promote scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds.
- Strong publication record with experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports and research posters.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Postdoctoral Fellow positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience. This position has a targeted monthly salary range of $7,455 - $8,326 and is expected to start at $7,455 or above.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
