Media Production Specialist II
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Day-to-day work is performed relatively independent under general supervision with guidance for priorities and new assignments. Provides technical and aesthetic leadership and works directly with graphic designers and the Director of Communication Design in the creation of compelling visual content. Mentors and provides training for C&PR photography student assistant(s) via photography assignments and digital asset management tasks including tagging/filing of digital photo and video assets, as well as equipment setup for photos and video projects. Provides ingenuity to develop and execute media productions and leadership for overall technical, aesthetic, and programmatic components of productions and related multimedia activities. Researches and develops proposals for new equipment, technology, and production initiatives. Keeps current on emerging digital techniques for video, photo, audio, and editing skills.
Photography: Provides photographic support for events on and off campus including special events, personnel honors and awards, and other University activities. Provides setup and organizes all portrait photography including environmental and portrait (headshot) on a regular basis to support photography services provided by C&PR. Serves as photographic editor for a variety of communication channels including print and digital publications, online presentations, websites, and social media platforms.
Videography: Manages all phases of multimedia productions including client consultation for details and logistics, project planning, and developing standard timelines and production schedules for video/photo production to meet stated objectives. Includes filming, editing, and postproduction activities for videos that communicate and document the University’s brand through digital storytelling. On occasion, may conduct interviews with video subjects and work closely with C&PR Communication Specialists (writers) or project managers who may be conducting behind-the-camera interviews or prompts for interviewees. Coordinates requests for inclusion of closed captioning and language translation for videos with the CSU assistive technology service provider or other external vendors and adds the content to videos as needed. Researches and selects royalty-free materials such as but not limited to music/soundtracks, imagery, b-roll, and digital assets to support the creative message.
Digital Asset Management: Organizes, archives, and maintains a digital asset and storage system (cloud-based and campus servers) used for the management and curation of photos and videos used for publications, graphic design, website, and presentations for the purpose of promoting the University’s brand. Generates, manages, and curates photo imagery, b-roll, and videos for use to develop creative visual concepts for a wide mix of initiatives and projects. Builds and maintains a library of campus architecture, scenery, campus life, and classroom settings.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred in art, photography, or a related field required.
Experience: At least five years of professional photography, video, or multimedia experience required; or a combination of education and event and photo/video experience on a year for year basis required. Unmanned aircraft (UAS) drone operations license (part 107) preferred. Extensive experience with digital storytelling through mixed media highly desirable.
Other Knowledge/Skills: Solid to advanced photographic capabilities as well as filming, audio, editing, and postproduction proficiency. Ability to develop, create, stage, and/or produce professional quality visuals/assets and evaluate production effectiveness in meeting objectives. Thorough and strong knowledge of production techniques, materials, and equipment used in the production of multimedia communication assignments including audio recordings, graphics, photography, videotaping, lighting, and editing methods. Ability to set up and operate a wide variety of production equipment, including set-up for multi-camera video productions, studio, cameras, lighting, teleprompters, and related equipment. Highly focused and seasoned editorial photo editing experience with a vast understanding of all stages of magazine production including quality control of page proofs and color-correction of photos for website, print, or static mediums. Familiarity with accessibility and federal 508 compliance as it relates to media content, delivery, and closed captioning. Ability to understand operating procedures and underlying technology to use and troubleshoot equipment and systems and develop innovative solutions to complex multimedia problems and evaluate the effectiveness of productions. Ability to translate briefs into creative solutions and take direction and strategic input and apply into evolution of the work. Good writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to work with external vendors for inclusion of closed captioning for videos produced. Ability to work with and train C&PR student photography assistant(s) involved in production projects or photography assignments. Advanced computer skills using PC or Mac platforms with demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Professional proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, and Adobe After Effects.
A positive, outgoing, and collegial attitude, excellent interpersonal skills and a high level of professionalism, good judgment, and discretion is required. Strong time management and organizational skills and ability to focus on multiple projects and fluid priorities while completing high-quality work against strict and conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work productively in a highly collaborative, diverse, and sometimes independent work environment.
Most assignments take place on campus, however, there may be evening and weekend hours, as well as some travel. Must have the ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program; must have the ability to provide proof of eligibility to lawfully operate a motor vehicle in the state of California.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Hiring Range: $5,417 to $5,834 per month
