Job Description

Performs venipuncture and medical testing on research participants in a community-based setting, collects specimens, and transports blood specimens.

Duties:

  • Processes laboratory orders from providers.
  • Documents HIPAA required information and verifies patient information before collection of specimens.
  • Responsible for efficiently and accurately performing venipuncture on patients or study participants.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection on the vials and delivers specimen samples to the laboratory for processing and testing.
  • Collects specimens from adults and children such as stool and urine. Instructs patients in self-collect specimens.
  • Performs various medical tests such as urinalysis or centrifuge blood samples. 
  • Prepares specimens for transport.
  • Labels all samples and storage tubes and logs all samples obtained into the database..
  • Transports specimens to laboratories and departments.
  • Maintains equipment associated with venipuncture.
  • May clean, store, and order such equipment.
  • Ensures patient privacy adhering to Health Insurance and Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA). 
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures, Federal, State, and local regulations and standards
  • Documents testing and results in a quality control log.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED AND:

  • 6 months of experience as a Phlebotomist or completion of formal phlebotomy certification training from a vocational training institute.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Detail oriented.

Certifications:

  • Licensed Phlebotomist in the State of Oklahoma or completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training program.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification 

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Physical: Standing for long periods of time. Manual dexterity. Speaking, listening, stooping, bending, reaching.
