The CIWRO (Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations) student research assistant will assist researchers at CIWRO and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in processing, quality controlling, and archiving data from the NSSL Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD) Phased Array Radar and the NSSL WSR-88D (KOUN). The student assistant will be expected to:

  • Process ATD data sets using open source and internal software tools
  • Review processed data and document any issues
  • Assist NSSL scientists with data archiving and management tasks
  • Contribute to shared documentation
  • Participate in ATD/KOUN data collection in collaboration with NSSL and CIWRO scientists

CIWRO and NSSL scientists will provide training about data collection,, specialized software, and weather radar principles. In addition to the primary tasks listed above, the assistant will also contribute to data analysis of KOUN and ATD data to compare the benefits of conventional and phased array radars.

Position is in the National Weather Center and must complete a U.S. Department of Commerce background check, which takes a minimum of 30 days for clearance.

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled in the Spring Term as a student at the University of Oklahoma . Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.


  • Must attach Spring 2024 class schedule

Department Preferences:

  • Preferred major within Atmospheric & Geographic Sciences or related field, such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Physics
  • Scripting or programming experience (e.g., shell, Python)
  • Experience with related weather data such as radar data
