SCOPE OF POSITION
Under the direction of a pharmacist and in coordination with other technicians, prepares unit dose and intravenous medications for dispensing to patients. Makes scheduled deliveries to appointed nursing units to deliver medications to patients. Assists pharmacists with medication order entry into the pharmacy computer system. Maintains stock levels of medications to avoid delays in service to patients. Demonstrates ability to work as a member of a team. Serves as functional and technical expert in a given area or specialty. Leads and directs technical activities in that specialized area. Lead Pharmacy Technician acts as a positive role model for all technicians and acts in an encouraging manor conducive to the hospital, department and administration?s visions and values. Lead Pharmacy Technician assists and or lead with productivity management, training, mentoring of new staff, special projects, and committee meetings. Lead Pharmacy Technician complies with all hospital and department rules, regulations and requirements.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position performs all duties of a Pharmacy Technician Senior, in addition to coordinating daily workflow, daily assignments and providing overall support to the operation of the department. The Lead provides all quality assessment and audit activities for the Pharmacy area. This position functions to assist the licensed pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services to patients, as well as providing necessary services and information to nursing and medical staff. These services include leading the preparation and packaging of medications, distribution of medications, supplies and equipment, maintaining proper inventory levels, keeping appropriate records and documentation, and submitting patient charges/credits. This position is also responsible for supporting initiatives of area supervisors and managers and at times assists in the implementation of such. Provides assistance in assessing Pharmacy Technicians? performance for annual appraisals, as well as orienting new staff to the Pharmacy area. The Lead may cover additional Manager responsibilities, as necessary, in the Manager?s absence, or should a vacancy occur.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads the preparation and packaging of medication dosage forms for oral, parenteral, enteral, ophthalmic, topical, and rectal administration for patient use and in research protocols. Responsible for the overall preparation of sterile intravenous admixtures, including small and large volume parenterals, cassettes for portable infusion devices, chemotherapy, and total parenteral nutrition solutions using aseptic technique for use in patients and in research protocols. Leads staff in the preparation of self administered medications to improve patients' understanding of their medication regimen. Maintains accurate dispensing records for controlled substances and other medications, supplies and equipment. Maintains efficient area operations and resolves problems to ensure optimal customer service. Works under the direction of a licensed pharmacist in accordance with applicable state and federal laws. Maintains appropriate medication, equipment and supplies inventory levels to minimize delays in customer service. Under the direction of a pharmacist, inspects medication areas and maintains storage standards set forth by the JCAHO and other health regulatory agencies. Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the area and anywhere medications are stored. Interacts with physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals. Participates in the orientation and training of volunteers, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, undergraduate and graduate students and other hospital staff. Attends department sponsored continuing education programs. Satisfies life-safety training and other training and education requirements.
Minimum Education Required
HS Graduate or Equivalent or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications
High school diploma, active OH Board of Pharmacy Certified Pharmacy Technician registration, PTCB/NHA certification, 3 years of experience within OSUWMC department of pharmacy. Further qualifications defined based on departmental guidance on pharmacy technician career laddering.
