General Description of the Job Class
Coordinate and manage Pharmacy-related activities and Pharmacy Technician staff in order to achieve continuous and optimal patient care.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Directly responsible for the management of Pharmacy Technicians including, but not limited to, hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, promotions, disciplinary actions, vacation schedules, and maintaining payroll records and time reports.
Plan and schedule work for the Pharmacy Technicians, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties. Train new personnel.
Conduct technician meetings to assure staff are appropriately briefed on departmental and health system updates and communications. Manage daily operations of technician-related Pharmacy services, including developing, updating, and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all technician duties.
Problem-solve patient complaints and complex medication-related issues with communication/follow-up with department heads and administration.
Ensure adequate resources to meet needs of patients and staff.
Manage pharmaceutical supply inventories and responsible for all pharmaceutical supply ordering. Processes all drug, equipment and supply orders and returns. Communicate with vendors including wholesaler, pharmaceutical and supply companies, etc. Oversee cost containment activities related to pharmaceuticals (product substitution, price increases, etc.). Supervise drug distribution to clinics and satellite centers. (e.g. floorstock, immunizations)
Serve as Clinical Coordinator for the Durham Technical Community College Pharmacy Technology Program. Structures and supervise the training and evaluations of pharmacy technician students during on-site rotations.
Participate in the preparation of department budget. Make budgetary recommendations and projections. Monitor, verify and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds, compiling information reflecting expenditures, and develop cost-comparisons. Identify cost savings within the operation. May be responsible for managing grants and overseeing finances for specialty drug programs.
Actively contributes to the strategic planning and achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives. Analyze, develop and implement strategies to continually improve performance and quality.
Provide for technician development and ensure necessary safety and quality control in the delivery of drug products.
Ensure compliance with legal, safety and security requirements including but not limited to, required weekly reporting of control substances dispensation to North Carolina Medicaid Office (CSRS), monitoring of Medicaid reimbursement, safety standards (fire, OSHA, etc.), emergency planning, etc.
Represent the organization at local, state and national-level with Pharmacy-related committees and organizations.
Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
- High school diploma and completion of a certified pharmacy technician training program is required.
- Associates or Bachelors degree in a healthcare or business-related field strongly preferred.
Experience
- Five years of experience as a pharmacy technician, including at least one year of experience in a Pharmacy leadership role, is required.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
- Pharmacy Technician certification required
- Pharmacy Technician, Advanced certification strongly preferred
- Registered with NC Board of Pharmacy required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to select, train, supervise, evaluate, and discipline employees.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work flexible schedule.
- Possess considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, and different pharmacy work areas and equipment used.
- Ability to operate a computer and use related software.
- Ability to establish, maintain, and promote effective working relationships.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work flow and activities.
