Summary of Job Duties:

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist works under minimal supervision for UAMS West Regional Campus (Fort Smith, AR). A clinical pharmacy specialist provides expertise to the department not routinely available from the pharmacy staff. The abilities of this individual may include a broad background in pharmaceutical care, specifically in clinical pharmacy practice, with knowledge applicable to both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. This clinical pharmacy specialist provides pharmaceutical care services and clinical expertise using approved disease state management protocols in collaboration with other health professionals, managing patient drug therapy/pharmacokinetics/nutrition by consult, providing patient education, and promoting high quality, evidence-based, cost-effective medication therapy strategies through clinical recommendations. The clinical pharmacy specialist participates in multi-disciplinary settings and team rounds to optimize patient care while educating providers, residents, and students. Performs these duties in the clinical areas as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a clinical pharmacy residency (PGY1) OR 5 years of proven experience in direct patient care in a clinical practice setting.
  • Certification as a licensed Registered Pharmacist by the State of Arkansas OR eligible for licensure in Arkansas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pharm.D.
  • PGY2 residency training AND 2 years of proven experience in direct patient care in an inpatient or ambulatory care clinical practice setting.
  • Board certification (such as BCPS or BCACP) is preferred and/or expected within 3 years of working in this clinical pharmacy specialist position. 
  • The clinical pharmacy specialist will also become credentialed as a clinician to provide disease state management through approved protocols in the designated clinical practice setting(s). 


Responsibilities:
Clinical

  • Ability to work independently and handle stress appropriately
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the medical center and all pharmacy staff
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedules
  • Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond quickly to urgent/emergent clinical or medication-related requests
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing)
  • Ability to review complex medication regimens and provide evidence-based recommendations to optimize patient care and outcomes
  • Ability to apply pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamics principles to recommend new or alternative medication regimens
  • Ability to provide formal education programs relating to appropriate use of drug therapy
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of pharmacy including the Pharmacy Practice Act
  • Knowledge of state and federal drug laws and guidelines
  • Knowledge of hospital pharmacy operations, clinical pharmacy services, and ambulatory care clinical settings
  • Knowledge of computer systems, even more specifically, pharmacy computer systems
  • Ability to plan, develop, and administer a clinically-oriented pharmacy program that includes both clinic and telehealth visits
  • Ability to coordinate activities in clinical settings with the pharmacy department and with other divisions of the hospital
  • Ability to coach, evaluate, mentor, model, precept, and teach pharmacy students and pharmacy residents (PGY-1 or PGY-2)

Administrative

  • Documentation of patient care activities
  • Protocol and order set development, formulary management, drug utilization reviews, and cost-savings initiatives
  • Participate in department, hospital and campus committees upon request
  • Develop, implement, and expand Clinical Pharmacy Services in assigned area
  • Potential patient scheduling for clinic visits
  • Attendance at clinic and/or pharmacy department meetings
  • Maintains annual competencies as required
  • Evaluations in PharmAcademic, CoreElms, or New Innovations for residents and students on rotation
