Pharmacy Manager 1 - PHARMACY MGR 1
Job Summary
This position is the pharmacy manager for Pharmacy Inpatient and is responsible for overseeing central pharmacy operations which is a 24/7 pharmacy dispensing ~6 million doses annually and an annual budget of ~$100M. This position is responsible for indirectly and directly managing roughly 75 staff members, which includes 2 technician supervisors, 1 lead senior pharmacist and 15 staff pharmacists. This position is responsible for providing managerial and programmatic direction for the operations of pharmacy services for the department of pharmacy. Develops, budgets, and provides standards of work performance and plans, directs, and monitors and evaluates the provision of distributive and clinical pharmacy services. Promotes and demonstrates effective inter-disciplinary and inter-facility collaboration and services as facilitator for education, consultation, and research. Ensures the functions of the department are consistent with the policies and procedures as set by the manager and in conjunction with the University of California. Manages the activities that provide for the purchasing, receiving, storage, delivery and distribution of medications and related supplies to greater than 250 Pyxis locations throughout the medical center as well as greater than 30 offsite clinic locations. Manages crash cart processes and pumps distribution. Ensures compliance with State and Federal regulations, Joint Commission and professional practice standards, as well as University and department policies, procedures and standards Assures adequate departmental staffing according to workload metrics while maintaining expected productivity levels as set forth by national, regional, and hospital benchmarking. Develops standards of work performance, orientation and training programs for new hires as well as 29 PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents annually. The manager is responsible for all routine operations of pharmacy services including controlled substances, non-controlled medications, the delivery of pumps and all sterile and hazardous products throughout the health system. Participates in the recruitment, selection, orientation, professional development and evaluation of employees; Serves as a change agent, role model, and serves as facilitator as occasions arise. The manager is responsible for all IT and construction plans in Central Pharmacy as well as maintaining compliance with regulatory agency standards throughout the construction and final phases. The position reports up to and works with the Assistant Chief, Acute Care Operations and works along-side the managers for compounding services and perioperative services. Serve as departmental liaison with Patient Care Services and other departments. Participates on departmental and interdisciplinary committees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed Pharmacist in the State of California.
  • Out of State Pharmacist Eligible to Apply.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience.
  • Academic Medical Center experience or completion of a Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency.
  • Must remain competent on the ever-changing regulations around pharmacy practice by the Board of Pharmacy, CDPH, TJC, Title IX as well as the regulations regarding building codes for the central space that are governed by OSHPD and state agencies.
  • Full understanding of DEA and USP795 regulations and how they integrate into the team's workflows and how the staff remain in compliance with the regulations.
  • Foundational managerial skills to lead large groups of people in a dynamic environment as well as be a high accountable and organized project manager for construction, operational and informatics projects.
  • Excellent communicator and be able to interact and connect with front line staff as well as executive leaders inside pharmacy and outside pharmacy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Board Certification (e.g. BCPS) or equivalent.
  • LEAN Certifications
  • Master's degree (MS, MHA, MBA) or equivalent.
    Supply chain management experience.
  • Strategic planning experience.

The Department of Pharmacy Inpatient is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.
The Department of Pharmacy Inpatient offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.

Work Environment
This position is 'exempt' and on occasion, the employee may have to work longer than the scheduled shift. Employee may have routine on-call assignment in which availability by Teams or email is required. Employee will also need to be available by Teams or email after hours for consultation if needed. The situation may arise where the employee will need to return to work in emergency situations. The position will be mostly days, but could include evening shifts, day shifts, and rotating weekend shifts as applicable. TB skin testing required annually. Must have good personal hygiene and dress in a professional manner consistent with the Departmental professional behavior policy.
