General Description of the Job Class
As a member of the pharmacy leadership team, the coordinator is responsible for assuring that Pharmacy Services are provided in a safe and efficient manner resulting in positive outcomes for patients. This individual coordinates the unit dose repackaging program to deliver high quality and efficient services to their customers and serves as the department
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
This position integrates both a coordination role and a clinical pharmacist role with approximately 20% of time spent coordinating repackaging program, 20% critical drug shortage management, 20% emergency preparedness, and 40% of time staffing in pharmacy procurement operations as needed.
Operations Coordination:
Assume primary responsibility for managing the oral solid and liquid repackaging technology, workflow, process control, and provide direction for personnel to ensure safety and efficiency.
Plans, designs, and implements process improvement ideas in pharmacy procurement.
Coordinates the department’s operational emergency preparedness and response plans.
Leads staff development projects (design, implementation, impact measurement)
Demonstrates the value of pharmacy services and serves as the primary liaison for customers
Participates in recruiting and selection of staff
Provides on-call support during evenings and weekends
Attends Pharmacy Leadership Council meetings
Provides regular updates during staff meetings and daily huddles
Works with peers to achieve work-unit and departmental goals
Coordinates the development and maintenance of repackaging library and templates in the electronic system.
Maintains compliance with United States Pharmacopeial Convention’s applicable chapters including procurement and repackaging services.
Maintains compliance with the North Carolina State Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations
Conducts performance evaluations for pharmacy technicians
Maintains accurate staff time and coordinates compensation based on budget allocated
Determines and implements cost control procedures
Clinical Pharmacist:
Assists with the day to day operational duties in pharmacy procurement, distribution, and repackaging operations.
Evaluates appropriateness of workflow/procedures and coordinates enhancements
Monitors and reports medication errors and adverse drug reactions
Provides educational lectures (Duke, State/Local, National)
Maintains familiarity with all departmental programs and initiatives
Instructs patients and stakeholders on the proper use of medications
Promotes rational, cost-effective drug therapy
Promotes adherence to the formulary policies, state and national regulatory standards
Maintains accurate inventory and accountability of medications
Takes responsibility for personal and professional competency and growth
Oversees purchasing, receiving, stocking, storage, handling, repackaging, and distribution of drugs.
Collaborates with Clinical Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technician Coordinator to organize and direct activities of pharmacy technicians
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education:
Doctor of Pharmacy Degree OR BS Pharmacy Degree
Experience:
Two years of pharmacy practice experience
Managerial/supervisor experience preferred
Completion of a management residency program; or completion of a non-management pharmacy residency program and two years supervisory experience; or equivalent management experience
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Licensed Pharmacist or eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
