Description

The PhD Program Director is the academic administrative officer responsible for the PhD in nursing program in the School of Nursing. The Program Director ensures that the standards and policies of the School of Graduate Studies, the University, and the School of Nursing (as applicable) are met in the PhD program, and further that the program achieves the highest standards for PhD education outlined by national bodies in nursing education (e.g., the American Association of Colleges of Nursing). The program director is responsible for facilitating the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the School of Nursing’s PhD in nursing program. All graduate programs at the School of Nursing operate under the auspices of the Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) and the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School.  

Responsibilities include:

• Providing leadership and continuous quality improvement efforts within the program, including:

   o Assisting Student Services office with student recruitment

   o Monitoring student progression

   o Working with faculty regarding student issues

   o Working with program faculty for curriculum improvements

   o Mentoring new program faculty

   o Evaluating program outcomes with in coordination with the School’s evaluation specialist

   o Ensuring program is meeting the pertinent standards and guidelines

   o Coordinating among the faculty and courses to facilitate coverage of essential content, minimization of redundancies, and distribution of student workload

   o Annual evaluation of program goals and achievements

• Providing input on course scheduling and faculty assignments

• Participating in strategic planning for PhD nursing education

• Participating in periodic external review of PhD program

• Providing leadership for the regular review of the School of PhD program relative to strategic plan

• Participating in seeking and implementing PhD training grants

• Engaging in an active program of extramurally funded research


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Current licensure as a professional registered nurse preferred; Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD)

• Experience in PhD education, curriculum development, and program evaluation in nursing

• Evidence of success in an extramurally funded program of research

• Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills and abilities in collaborative works

• Rank of Associate or Full Professor; eligible to chair PhD dissertations (i.e. tenure-track or tenured)
