Job Summary

The Pesticide Investigator will perform a variety of state and federal compliance activities for pesticide laws and regulations throughout the State of Indiana. This position will complete field investigation, inspection and related compliance activities that are designed to ensure that pesticides are used and distributed safely and legally in Indiana. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Conducting statewide pesticide investigation and inspection regulatory compliance activities of approximately 2,500 commercial licensed businesses, 9,000 commercial applicators and technicians, 17,000 private applicators (farmers), 800 pesticide dealers and consultants, and 16,000 pesticide products
  • Conducting use/misuse investigations in response to consumer complaints
  • Interpreting both state and federal pesticide laws and regulations for regulated industries and the general public
  • Implementing the collection of official samples of pesticide products for quality analysis, label review and registration validation as well as the collection of environmental samples in support of use/misuse investigations
  • Maintaining positive public relations in representing the Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) and Purdue University in accomplishing duties, including compliance assistance activities
  • Cooperating with Purdue Pesticide Programs in industry in the training of pesticide applicators and technicians
  • Advising the Pesticide Administrator and managerial staff on the development of policies and procedures for pesticide complaints, misuse investigations and other field activities
  • Overseeing special projects or programs as assigned by pesticide managers or supervisors, and confirmed by the Pesticide Administrator

Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Ag engineering, agronomy, animal science, biochemistry, biology, botany, plant pathology, chemistry, criminal justice, environmental sciences, forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture/design, veterinary sciences, criminology, entomology, natural resources, behavioral sciences or related
  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Must have strong oral/ written communication and public speaking skills
  • Must be able to execute situation analysis and have the ability to comprehend scientific/technical materials
  • Ability to interpret laws/regulations, resolve conflicts and prioritize work
  • Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license
  • Travel

 

Preferred:

  • Pesticide or agricultural inputs production/usage/regulation, environmental or natural resources regulation, law enforcement, conflict management, criminal justice experience
  • Pesticide applicator certification
