Responsible for establishing and implementing a pesticide program for the University's landscape and grounds or academic and housing buildings that is in compliance with current federal and state laws.

Duties:

  • Performs tasks requiring good organizational skills.
  • Develops a written program for control of major pests associated with ornamental plants, turfs, or all campus buildings.
  • Implements and maintains a pesticide program by applying pesticide and supervising the work of others in this area.
  • Provides a list of materials and estimated quantities of each material necessary to control normal outbreaks of pests common to this area.
  • Determines the necessary amount and properly mixes the chemicals to be utilized for each application.
  • Ensures security and inventory of pesticide materials and equipment.
  • Maintains records of pesticide applications performed.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Job Requirements

Education: None

Experience: 12 months of pest control experience 

Skills:

  • Uses tools or equipment in a manner requiring proficiency
  • Reading and Interpreting: Reads and interprets routine written or printed materials
  • Ability to perform basic math, ex. mix rate, application rate, and determining treatment area to include acres, sq ft, and linear ft. 
  • Ability to speak with staff, students, and faculty about treatments performed
  • Ability to schedule services and follow-ups as needed
  • Ability to set and check nuisance wildlife traps according to pertinent laws to include during adverse times outside of normal schedule and during adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to follow all pertinent nuisance wildlife laws after they have been captured and to treat each animal in the most humane manner

Certifications:

  • Certified according to the Oklahoma Pesticide Service Technician 

Department Preference:

  • Must hold valid Driver's License

Working Conditions:

  • Physical: Frequently pushing and pulling. Frequently kneeling, stooping and crouching. Frequently reaching at or below shoulder level. Frequently bending, climbing, sitting and standing. Lifting and carrying loads up to 50 pounds independently. Frequently working in awkward positions. Frequently climbing stairs. Ability to work on various sizes of ladders including step, A-frame, and extension. Ability to work at heights to include on top of Roofs that are several stories up. Ability to work in confined spaces, such as crawlspaces, attics, basements, electrical and mechanical rooms. Ability to wear all required PPE for extended periods of time and in adverse conditions. Ability to work in low light conditions. Ability to use a wide range of hand tools, power tools, powered and manual soil probes, soil augers, and concrete drills and tools.
  • Environmental: Exposure to extreme temperature changes. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. Exposure to chemicals. Exposure to displeasing odors. Exposure to loud noises. Exposure to disagreeable tasks or conditions. Exposure to pests to include nuisance wildlife, rodents, arachnids, insects, and stinging and biting pests of all kinds, including distressed or disease carrying pests. Required to wear a university-provided uniform. Some overtime, including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required. May be designated as an essential position during emergency closures. May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies. 

Supervision: Team lead in relevant pest situations.
