(Job #514191) Performing Arts Technician III, Technical Director, $3,717 - $6,726 monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position, with a one-year probationary period in the School of Dance, Music and Theatre. Position Summary: The Technical Director and Scene Shop Technician is an artisan charged with directing the technical aspects of theatrical productions and operations; overseeing the scene shop; and overseeing the use and stewardship of the University's theatres. The Technical Director's work includes oversight of students, staff and volunteers for student Dance, Film, Music, and Theatre academic productions as well as all University uses of the Cal Poly Humboldt theatres.


Key Responsibilities: The duties associated with this position are highly dynamic but ultimately provide broad oversight and support for the overall operation and function of the theatrical productions and operations. Work may vary considerably day to day and may include components of the following duties:

Technology and Production (75%)

 

  • Technical drafting and engineering of structural scenic elements including their rigging and shifting which includes the ability to utilize computer software in order to evaluate and actualize theatre-based designs such as Scenery and Lighting and the ability to interpret drawings, sketches, spreadsheets, databases, etc. as necessary to communicate and to oversee the complete construction process.
  • Fabrication of scenic and properties items from drawn plans for plastics, metalworking, carpentry, and cabinetwork. This includes generating and completing bills of materials, cut lists, cutting, assembling, and finishing items.
  • Safe use of hand and power tools in the creation of scenery and properties construction and oversee the correct and safe use of these tools by others.
  • Maintenance of the inventory of equipment (stage rigging, machinery, and other systems) and assurance they are in good and safe working order.
  • Reading and evaluation of dramatic scripts and/or production concepts with attention to technical requirements.
  • Creative and technical consultation and leadership on a variety of production issues and provides lead work direction to various theatre production staff and student assistants.
  • Participation in various meetings to support Dance, Film, Music, and Theatre productions.
  • Administrative (25%)

     

  • Regular oral, written, electronic, and digital communication with faculty, staff, students, Conference and Events Services, Center Arts, and visitors to ensure harmonious relationships and understanding.
  • Collaboration with faculty, various artists, and technicians, some of whom may be unskilled students under pressure.
  • Participation in department and program meetings.
  • Communication and personnel oversight to support various users of the University's theatre facilities to ensure good community relations and safe and effectual event production.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include: Knowledge of theatrical, scenic, costume, lighting, and sound design practices, such as the:

     

    • Ability to effectively translate the designer's renderings, models and/or sketches into practical stage settings requiring the following:
      • Skill in communicating technological solutions, including technical drafting, sketching, model building.
      • Knowledge of the materials commonly used in scenic construction, the strengths of these materials and their safe use.
      • Excellent skill in the various methods of scenic construction including plastics fabrications, metalworking, carpentry, and cabinetwork.
      • Knowledge of the safe handling procedures for scenic equipment, hand and power tools, and materials used in scenic construction, as well as the ability to maintain equipment in good and safe working order
      • Ability to read computer software to support the production process as appropriate (spreadsheets, databases, CAD, Vectorworks, etc.)
      • Skill in stage operations and stage maintenance, including stage rigging and machinery, stage lighting equipment, and stage audio equipment.
      • Knowledge of dramatic literature and history of theatre (including its production), art, architecture, and decor in order to appropriately understand designs and visual elements.

    • Administrative skills to coordinate with other Dance, Film, Music, and Theatre areas and oversee students and staff.
      • Skill in a range of managerial functions required in the technical operations of a theatre, including studio and personnel scheduling, management, fiscal management (budget development, materials acquisition, record keeping), stage and studio maintenance, and equipment acquisitions.
      • Skill in oral communication essential to the creation of scenery and to the smooth operation of the technical aspects of the theatre.
      • Ability to work and collaborate with various artists and technicians, some of which may be unskilled students under pressure.
      • Ability to work and collaborate with various users of our facilities to ensure good community relations and safe and effectual event production.
      • Ability to track purchases and time-bases for students and staff payroll.
      • Ability to use Google Drive, Microsoft Office, 25Live, and other university software and online resources essential to communication and coordinating with people on and off campus.
    • Teaching skills to guide and support student and staff education and instruction.
      • Ability to convey technical and design information to students and staff in the shops and in studios, theatres, and performance spaces.
      • Ability to help students apply classroom learning to real world situations.
      • Ability to work effectively with diverse students, staff, and faculty.

    Minimum Qualifications: One to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty. This background would normally be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:

     

    • Professional experience as a Technical Director or master carpenter in an educational performing arts environment.
    • A MA, MFA or undergraduate degree in Theatre or closely related field or equivalent professional experience.
