Position Overview

The Senior Programmer/Architect in the KU Information Technology division works with independence as part of KU IT Application Development providing key foundational support for KU systems and services. 

This position works with independence within a standards-based, collaborative, team environment and is a PeopleSoft developer whose work will interact with databases, web services, end-users, and files.  Each of these will potentially be inputs and/or outputs to the services being developed.  Different skill sets may be emphasized as dictated by current priorities requiring the incumbent to be adaptable and flexible.  This position has latitude for independent decisions while collaborating in a team environment.  The architect sets and creates the technical structure and direction used by other developers, in areas critical to the organization.

Effective, independent communication with peers, other campus service providers/data sources, vendors and management is essential to assure timely and well-documented results.  This responsibility can include user experience design, dynamic interactivity, integrating applications with external systems, and accessibility. This position will utilize existing purchased and/or open-sourced software and will be asked to investigate and create custom solutions. The incumbent is expected to work autonomously within the architectural frameworks established.

Job Description

50% - Innovate new services and solutions

  • Implement new solutions to improve upon the web presence and any applications in use.
  • Researches and recommends new technologies and end-user enhancements
  • Evaluate and implement ADA best practices for online technologies
  • 25% - Development & Support

  • Develops, improves upon, and maintains software, applications and web sites under the supervision of a senior programming staff while seeking methods for automation, efficiency, and security conscious development.
  • Recommends user experience enhancements for websites and applications.
  • Works with staff to verify, document, report, and resolve incidents and problems, either internal or vendor.  Tracks, tests, and reports resolution.
  • Writes and organizes technical documentation required to maintain websites and applications
  • 10% - Lead and supervise projects

  • Provide technical guidance to team members and assist them throughout the SDLC
  • Provide direction and leadership on technical projects
  • Possible supervision and time approval for team members.
  • 10% - Project Planning

  • In consultation with the designated IT and campus unit staff, creates project plans and carries out prioritized projects related to ongoing support and service delivery, coordinating with other staff as needed.
  • Participates in IT Service management including incident and problem resolution.
  • Communicates frequently with the unit manager and other developers to provide status updates and knowledge to clients and peers.
  • Ensures deliverables meet relevant standards and architecture in a team culture of code walk through.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned.

    Position Requirements

    This position will be a hybrid of telework and on-site work as determined by supervisor.

    Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED and ten years of relevant professional experience OR an Associate’s degree and eight years of relevant professional experience OR a Bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant professional experience
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience developing applications using Peoplesoft’s PeopleTools 8.56 or higher, JavaScript, Java, C++, C#, Python, etc.
  • 6 years of experience using SQL to work with a relational database such as Oracle (preferred), MySQL, Postgres, etc (can be via work history and/or classwork/projects)
  • Effective written and interpersonal communication skills as evidenced by application materials and interview process
  • Experience working in a team environment as evidenced by application materials

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • PeopleTools and/or Java development experience preferred.
  • Experience creating mobile/device responsive web sites, or mobile-specific application development.
  • Experience producing technical documentation
  • Experience with Web Services such as REST, SOAP, etc.
  • Linux operating system and command-line tools
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Component Interface, Application Engine, Integration Broker, SQR
  • Experience with middleware technologies including application servers, directory servers (LDAP), and authentication/authorization
  • Experience developing for ADA/Accessibility and application security
  • Experience using a version control system (Git preferred)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
