The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Dell Medical School is seeking a Pediatric Mental Health Therapist Associate who is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Associate (LPC-A) or Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW), to work as part of an interdisciplinary, team-based program that cares for patients enrolled in the Texas Child Health Access Through Telemedicine (TCHATT) program at UT Health Austin, Dell Medical School. This position will join our growing multi-disciplinary team to conduct behavioral and mental health assessments, treatment planning, brief interventions, and interdisciplinary team consultation as needed. In addition, the Pediatric Mental Health Therapist Associate will collaborate with leadership on program development. This position has an end date of 08/31/25, and may be renewable based upon availability of funding, work performance, and progress toward goals. Funding is expected to continue.

Purpose

The Pediatric Mental Health Therapist Associate will support patients, guardians and schools to improve a child’s overall functioning by providing counseling and care management services using a patient-centered, collaborative approach with an interdisciplinary team. Additionally, this position will conduct behavioral and mental health assessments, formulate and implement comprehensive assessments and individualized treatment plans, and complete interdisciplinary team consultation as needed. Clinical supervision towards LPC and LCSW licensure will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Completes a bio-psychosocial assessment of patients. The applied biopsychosocial model and approach will include cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, supportive therapy and/or other techniques and modalities as clinically indicated. Completes relative evaluations and treatment plans, and provides individual, family, and group psychotherapy. Participates in screening, tracking, and reporting of patient outcomes and social work interventions. Completes documentation in the clinical record related to interaction with individuals-served, families and other service providers in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with professional ethics and with both Federal and State regulation.

  • Provides discipline-specific knowledge to interdisciplinary team around mental health, cultural competency, social determinants of health, and innovative ways to approach chronic illness in patients. Participates in value-based research initiatives and research for patient care operational improvements.

  • Provides clinical support for an interdisciplinary team who is responsible for coordinating direct and/or indirect services to school staff, guardians and students. Assists students/guardians/school staff by (a) sharing information and perspectives on how other life factors are affecting mental health or other medical conditions and (b) helping students/guardians/school staff to build coping strategies, psychological skills, and ways to improve daily function and quality of life. Provides care management to include connecting patients to needed resources such as community mental health services, and other resources in the community. Provides support and evidence-based strategies to schools seeking consultation on mental health needs on their campus.

  • Develops and maintains working relationships with behavioral health providers in the community to create a network of aligned providers. Maintains a highly collaborative approach to a cohort of clinical team members, as well as the local, regional and national professional communities.

  • Participates in departmental meetings, continuing education opportunities, academic and research opportunities to optimize patient best practice and interdepartmental collaboration. Participates in clinical supervision, consistent with applicant’s own licensure and experience. Other duties as assigned.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Be a Licensed Professional Counselor, Associate (LPC-A), or Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW). Demonstrate the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a variety of other health care professionals (i.e., physicians, psychologists, social workers, school counselors, care coordinators). Maintain a positive, compassionate, and professional attitude when engaging with patients and their family members. Possess excellent interpersonal skills; written and oral communication skills; organizational, planning, follow-up/follow-through, and time management skills. Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-provider practice environment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

Have a minimum of three (3) years of post-degree clinical experience, preferably in direct mental health practice. Have experience delivering care as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Have a working knowledge of and/or experience with Brief Intervention, and Motivational Interviewing, and value-based healthcare delivery. Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.


Salary Range

$60,000+ depending on qualifications
