Job Description


The Controller’s Office provides financial solutions to a comprehensive research institution operating in a complex and highly regulated environment. With a strong focus on technology, efficiency, and collaboration, this Finance division helps lead the continued evolution of administrative operations that best support Virginia Tech’s world-class faculty, researchers, and students.
As the Payroll Manager reporting to the Director of Payroll you will:
• Use critical thinking to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
• Calculate and submit state payroll taxes
• Process payroll and payroll adjustments for each cycle
• Research and make payroll system recommendations to address new initiatives and programs
• Perform system upgrade testing
• Maintain procedural documentation for payroll processes
• Assist the Director of Payroll with special projects and other payroll related research as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, tax, business administration or allied field.
• Significant related experience.
• Considerable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
• Considerable knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, balancing, internal control, payroll taxes, and payroll software.
• Advanced spreadsheet and data analytics experience, including manipulation of large data sets, to analyze, summarize and present financial and narrative information clearly.
• Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, including ability to proactively recommend options to balance external compliance requirements with operational efficiency and customer service
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement payroll policies and procedures, to develop and enhance automated workflow/processes and systems, and to provide a leadership role for direct and indirect reports.


Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in accounting or allied field
• Certified Public Accountant license (CPA).
• Experience working in a higher education institution, or a similar large public, or private, decentralized organization.
• Experience with multi-state payroll operations.
• Demonstrated experience developing implementing, and communicating payroll policies and procedures.
• Experience working with a large ERP system (i.e., Banner, SAP, PeopleSoft, Workday) with high volume.


Salary Information

Commensurate with experience with a salary range of $80,000 to $90,000 per year
